"Connection Reset by Peer" or "hang"

Here is my problem: I am trying to install a software (Steam), and from time to time during the update (it gets the files from the net), it ends up either with "Connection reset by Peer" or it just hangs.

So you guys don't know what the problem is?

Here are the output of the program and the tcpdump log. I'm not sure if each is for a different test, but it might still help...

    What the hell is steam?

When you get "Connection reset by peer" that basically means that a client trys to connect to an SMTP port, but then resets the connection before completing the handshake. Is it possible to connect to a different server? Are you behind a router and/or firewall?

Steam is a content provider for games. The linux version is to set up game servers. (http://www.steampowered.com)

When I use the software (Steam) to install a game server (cstrike). It is shown by the output of Steam...

I am not behind a router for this server and my other linux box.

Also, instead of "Connection Reset by Peer", I can also get "Connection Reset" (without "by peer") or it can just hang.

BTW, I tried to reinstall knoppix on 3 different computers total: the original one, the other linux box, and my own PC (i used the same HD every time). And unfortunately, it NEVER worked.

Apparently, a data transfer starts but a packet gets dropped and that leaves a "hole". Your machine sends ack's letting the far end know about the hole, but they never get there. SO the far end eventually sees that something's wrong, and re-xmits what it thinks is the missing packet. BUT, since it never sees the right ack, it sends the wrong packet and the connection sits forever, until you kill it.

What does cat /proc/net/devices tell you?

How are you connected to the internet? Be specific.

Have a look through tcpdump up until the point to where it drops a packet. You should be able to see which one it's happening on. Then, see if it's always the same one maybe. Check out Ethereal- it will make your life easier.

    Go and read this

My guess is still the server you are trying to connect to. It seems to me that there are several to choose from.

You have two Linux boxes? Do they share your internet connection? If so how?

In your original post you say you're "trying to install software" and then "during the updates"- so which is it? You've installed the Steam software and while you're trying to get the automatic patch this is happening? Do you invoke the patching process yourself or does it happen when you log on their network?

Re: "Connection Reset by Peer" or "hang"

--I had problems just updating the original Half-life to the latest client today (v111 IIIRC.) Connection reset by peer usually means a transient error (their server is busy.) If the rest of your Internet connections/websites are working Ok, then just try it again later and/or find another server.

Here's how I'm connected to the net:

I have a DSL connection with a modem set up in bridge mode. I am sharing the connection using three computers: 1 linux router (Astaro), and 2 linux servers (Knoppix and E-Smith based on Red-Hat aka "other linux box").

What does cat /proc/net/devices tell you?
Apparently, the file doesn't exist. I tried to search around /proc/net and /proc/sys/net, but didn't find devices...

How can i know when it drops a packet?

Steam is a small-sized software to get the actual files for the games. In my case, I want to install Counter-Strike, so I do "./steam -update cstrike". It hangs while doing the update. To get the client itself, I just need to get it from a FTP site...

The problem is that when I tried it on my other linux box, it worked all the way to the end without doind this...

Ok. I re-installed knoppix for like the 7th time (because of switching back and forth between different hardware), and I tried again. Here are the output of Steam and tcpdump (It couldn't even get the first file!!!):
