    Knoppix and Deepfreeze

    Hey everyone....
Guess what I just discovered! (the subjects says it all)
You can go around Deepfreeze with knoppix...the only thing u need is the drive where Deepfreeze is has to be FAT and not NTFS (since you can't write in ntfs in linux)....I made a folder called "this shows that Deepfreeze is not perfect" with Knoppix, and Deepfreeze didn't delete it (I'm so happy)

BTW, Deepfreeze is a program that restores anything you do to a drive when u reboot the computer...including Fdisk's.... but it *sucks* when you modify it with Knoppix LOL YAY!

    Have a nice day,
    Hernan

Yes, this is true. However, what I did was use QTParted to resize the XP partition and took half the drive for a linux hdinstall!

    HA HA HA

    thx for the idea..

    hernan

Thawspace is a partition of the hd that doesn't reset after every reboot. Its usually only a hundred megs or so but still its really useful for getting round the evil nazi teachers at my school. Only thing is my friend and I can't find it thru knoppix. Ne ideas?

Well, you must realize that I'm one of those evil teachers at my school.

Except, from that my perspective, its the evil tech guys that don't let me do anything with the M$ WIMPDOZE partitions.

So, last year, when my hdds finally died and they had to upgrade my lab, I told them that I get half of every hdd to do as I will with linux and I'd leave their blasted M$ WIMPDOZE install alone or I would not teach AP CompSci anymore. Well, I guess that scared them....

    Enjoy,

Not trying to be a smart-aleck, but what exactly is so "evil" about this application? You mentioned in your own post (although I could have guessed even if you hadn't said anything) that these are your SCHOOL's machines you are talking about. The school's... as in, NOT YOURS... presumably provided for classwork-related activities (internet, word processing, etc).

It sounds like the system admins wish to avoid the headaches and potentially severe legal liability of people using their machines for porn, file-sharing, lauching of DOS and other attacks... not to mention picking up viruses and otherwise breaking things because people don't know what their doing and/or don't care (since it's not their machine, it's not THEIR problem). Good for them, that seems like responsible system management.

If you want a box to play with as you see fit, BUY ONE. These days a perfectly serviceable box runs only a few hundred bucks... a few weeks of working part-time job would get you there (especially right now during the holiday season, when part-time jobs literally grow on Christmas trees). I can't believe that so many people on these boards give the time of day to script-kiddies looking to use Knoppix as a tool for bypassing security and misusing property that isn't theirs.

You misunderstand my motives. I'm trying to teach Computer Science to my students. That's a little hard to do on a system where everything is locked-down so tight that you can't even compile anything. Further, linux is much more programmer friendly than the evil os....

    Regards,
