Boot hangs just after "INIT: version 2.78-knoppix"

NEC Versa Note VXi
Knoppix 3.2 (26/07/2003 snapshot)

The boot process hangs just after the line
INIT: version 2.78-knoppix booting
(the cd player keeps turning for about 15 seconds then stops, then nothing ...)

I tried the following to no avail :
- knoppix noscsi nopcmcia nousb noagp noswap noapm noapic nomce noddc
- failsafe
- expert
- knoppix 2
- boot from floppy made with knoppix

same result ...

"knoppix testcd" also hangs *before* checking the md5 on this machine


the CD works OK on other machines (testcd says the cdrom is ok on those)

what can i do to narrow down the problem

I have tried knoppix v3.3 snapshot 2003-11-03-BETA:

same problem ...

try poorman's install to remove the possibilty that the CD-ROM is the problem.

I have the same problem and I think I have the solution.

What we did to know why the boot process was failing was start knoppix with the option -b.

knoppix -b

Once I had the console I tried to run the script
/etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig

My problem was in this script. Each time I executed the script the system hanged.
I edited the script and wrote messages before each sentence to see where was the problem.
And I found it! In my case the problem appears trying to set the clock:
hwclock $UTC -s

My laptop has the RTC crystal broken. So I commented the line and executed again the script. After the change it will work!!! so I could run the Xfree also.

Now I have to burn a new CD with the knoppix-autoconfig modified so I don´t have to do always the same operation, but for know is enough.
