    dual boot

I posted a similar comment to Linux Tag (and it seemed that it immediately crashed! am I jinxed?)
I have been trying to install Linux for months. The only partial success was when I did a Linux only install ( and IIRC the controlcenter would not work).
Having been lurking on many linux forums it has become obvious, even to me, that I am not alone in wanting to keep MS for some apps while using and learning Linux. (At least one of the books I borrowed from the library pointed out in no uncertain terms that in order to learn linux it was necessary to have linux working on ones' compter.)
And yet, and yet, the commercial linux offerings conspicuously fail to address this problem.
A number of people have pointed out that the best way is to have a seperate computer for Linux; very nice if you have the space and, especially, the money!
David McNabs' tutorial unfortunately does not cover this topic of dual booting (with MS).
Given that many of the comments that have appeared on Slashdot, Linux Tag, et al. have concerned the introduction of Linux to newbies, I hope that this problem will be solved soooon.
    Please
    Thank you.

    re: dual boot

I haven't yet installed knoppix in a dual boot scenario, but your desire to do this is well waranted. Anyone out there who has done this and would be willing to put together a nice howto that would be useful to newbies? Is there a generic howto written for any other distro that might prove useful?

I have managed to get it to dual boot, but I use a boot manager other than lilo to do manage it between winXp and linux. It works for me no problem. It would be even easier with win98 or ME as lilo can boot them easily when its installed to the MBR but WinNT etc is a different matter as there is abit more work involved, there are various sites showing you hoto do it with WinNT,2K and XP. Did the knx-hdinstall prompt for the opertunity to amke a boot floppy ??

This is how I did it with two HD’s.

This is how I did it with two HD’s.
    The Set up

IDE 0 channel 0 XP HD
    IDE 0 channel 1 Zip
IDE 1 channel 0 Knopix HD
    IDE 1 Channel 1 DVD

When I installed Knoppix I removed my XP HD temporally so I would have no way of messing it up. Then I did a HD install of Knoppix tacking all the stander options for the install. One of the options is to create a boot disk, I did so. Reinstalled XP HD and every thing booted just fine. If I want Knoppix I boot with the boot disk (different than the one used for the CD) or chang my bios to boot to that drive first. If I want XP I just boot as normal.

Yes you need 2 HD but it is safe and easy and cheep.

    i have lots of experience

i have dual booted the following:

    1) Red Hat 8 with windows xp pro - NTFS
    2) Red Hat 8 with windows xp pro - fat32
    3) Red Hat 8 with windows 98 se - fat32
    4) Lindows with windows 98 se - fat32
    5) Knoppix with Windows XP pro - ntfs (with lilo - default)
    6) Knoppix with windows 98 se -fat32 (with lilo - default)

It seems that over recent months, the distros have realised that people want dual booting computers. Red Hat 8 is very simple, it sets up lilo on install, no messing from you. Knoppix also installs lilo for you, no messing. To install knoppix and get it dual booting with any windows just run knx-hdinstall from a root shell.

I'm presuming that you haven't tried setting up your pc to dual boot with linux and windows, because IT'S EASY!!
