netcardconfig doesn't work
After booting Knoppix 3.2 from a CD, I noticed that ETH0 was not configured with any IP-address. Hence I started netcardconfig from the root console, in an attempt to set it up to using DHCP. However, it came back with this error:
netcardconfig
Use DHCP broadcast?
Yes
Sending DHCP broadcast from device eth0Operation failed.
Failed.
The same ETH0 interface always gets the DHCP lease just fine on a Red Hat 8 Linux. It is connected to a wireless WET11 bridge, which in turn connects to a leased line gateway with a DHCP server.
Any ideas how to convince Knoppix 3.2 to set up a simple DHCP for the ETH0?

Just in case if it helps to resolve the problem: Red Hat 8 detects the eth0-interface as the following piece of hardware:
RealTek RTL-8139, SMC EZ Card
which is an onboard chip with an ethernet conncector.
I was hoping that Knoppix 3.2 would be an easy way to install a Debian-based Linux. So far it has failed with the eth0 and the sound chip (I have yet to see a Linux distribiution which will actually detect an Intel 82801DB AC onboard soundchip ....).

I myself am having similar problems with the Realtek 8139 card, which you can see in this posting: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4320
There are a number of things you might want to try, such as booting with knoppix noapic. See also this posting: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3459. Hopefully you'll be more successful than myself so far!

The NOAPIC even brought some life into my Intel 82801DB soundchip, though KDE itself still doesn't manage to produce any sounds with it for system events. Ah well, that's still more than Red Hat 8 ever did with it.
