New book featuring Knoppix published

Looks like a really good buy for the noobies out there!

I had a hard time finding it at my local Borders, however. They had one copy hidden in a book case in the back with all the old linix titles....

Actually just a little while ago I loaded it and I am very, very impressed with Knoppix. I just loaded it from the CD and presto! away it went. The very first time I had a problem with a blurry screen but that was because I was using it on an Acer 34T 14" monitor and the default resolution was set too high, so I rebooted, hit F2 for help and found how to manually set the resolution for X of which I set at 640X480.
It detected everything perfectly other than that. Of a curious note I've tried other distros before and ran into problems predominantly with burners but this time it listed the device as scd0 which is correct and was able to mount and read the drive (in my mind this a major accomplishment). Also found that it loaded (believe it or not) from the CD faster than Win '98. And finally the mouse was jumpy but this is because I used a Zoltrix PS/2 wheel mouse which never worked properly with any of the other distros so I'll just swap it for a Logitech and that will solve that problem. So if anyone is totally new to Linux I hope this is of some help to them. So for the sake of interest here are the specs of the computer I loaded it on. Oh one other note I should mention is that I've read that LG drives don't work well in Linux but in this case I no problems with it.

So my impression of Knoppix is it is simple, clean, lean and fast. If anyone would like to correct me on this you're more than welcome. As mentioned I've I've tried other distros, Mandrake 9.0, Redhat 8, Libranet, Storm, Corel,, Slackware, Icepack, and I'm not flaming any other distros because I appreciate the effort they put into their respective works after all it was Mandy that got me into Linux. I am only looking for a distro that I can share with my buddies who want to break away from Windows, false guilt, high prices, crashes, BSoD's,viruses, spyware, and in the future "phoning home"(...scary stuff) and simply put from the chains. Also I got Gentoo (They're right about the sexy logo ) but I'll wait untill I can get my brain a little more reacquainted with Linux after being knumbed by 98 before I try it (looks a little tricky)

So next is to do HDD install and dual-boot at first then give M$ the toss completely. I'm also going out to get a SMC Barricade DSL router and see how well that works out with Knoppix ( and I suspect I'll have no problems)
Also going to get a Toshiba DVD drive to how it behaves with that (Local store has it for $37 CAD+ tax)
So if anyone would like to know things go I would be more than happy to give updates on progress.

For anyone wanting to know the version of Knoppix that came with Mr. Gagne's book is 3.2. Today I finished reading the book...... ......whew!! all 319ppg since last Thursday, with the exception of Appendix B
(16ppg) which is devoted to shell commands (very helpfull) and I'll go over that tomorrow on my way to work.
I should also mention that the CD that came with the book doesn't have HDD install option so you can't install it to a hard drive. That's ok I ordered a 3.3 CD and it should be here around Wednesday, in the meantime I'll just keep running the CD that came with the book.

You know you can just download and burn your own CD. A new revision comes out every 2-4 weeks and a new version comes out about once or twice a year.

I got a life, and no, I repeat, no kernel panic, and no, I repeat no Blue Screen Of Death! I use Debian, installed through Knoppix, replacing Mandrake 9.0, which caused no 'kernel panic' either. I have been using Linux for over a year, and not one, single kernel panic! What's your prob, dude?

BTW, "blue screen of death" - google - 64000; bsod - google - 85000; "General Protection Fault" (the message most often seen in a bsod) - google - 45000; GPF - google - 274000.

Take a look at this site, if you need a bsod laugh: http://zem.squidly.org/bsod/ it gives you some images of bsod's that have shown up in some rather strange places...
