    Multiple Editions

    Hi all. Absolutly love Knoppix.

I wonder if it has ever been considered to create different editions of Knoppix. You could have a gammers, a programmers, a server and a publishers edition or something. I think the idea of Knoppix is genous in the first place, so why fret about using larger storage options to hold more data when it will only cause incompatibilites?

Just a thought. (personally, I would hold out for the 'Internet and Multimedia' edition of Knoppix so I can rip dvds and watch just about every type of media file and hopefully listen to Mp3Pro encoded audio files....almost 80gigs worth here....)

Well, this is exactly the way i'm going with Morphix. It has a light module now, heavy module should be ready monday/tuesday. for a gamermodule we are making a list of all the great games the community has to offer, for a servermodule we are collecting ideas (we'll probably build a ncurses-based app to turn different services on and off).

a programmers and publishers module would be a good idea, i'll see if i can do anything with it.

If you want, you are free to adapt the lightmodule into a Internet and Multimedia module, then again Morphix still is quite new (and contains some pecularities), but it works and is ready for testing.

If anyone ever gets any time before me (good chance!) then you might like to look at a Morphix module that includes:

    http://freevo.sourceforge.net
    http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/

I'm currently looking to squeeze a very small cli only image with Busybox (http://www.busybox.net), network connectivity, and samba-client onto some 50Mb credit card CDR's. Would ideally like nmap and nessus on their also, but I'll see what I can fit. Is Morphix base a good starting point for this?

Wow, 50MB CDR's? Well, you could get the base iso (the next version is 33MB's), and adapt that. It's quite easy to decompress and adapt, but still having hardware detection meant sarcificing quite a lot.

You'll have about 17MB's left of compressed space, you should be able to fix at least 40MB of your own apps on it. Should be more than enough for nmap, samba and a range of other useful tools

Keep in touch, would like to see if you can get busybox to work (havn't tried it myself, but looks like base could get a whole lot smaller with it...)

Sounds just the job! I'm off to download Morphix.

The 50Mb CDR's are usually used for people to put CV's and presentations on to give out as business cards, but I thought it would be handy to have a Linux distro on one that I could carry in my wallet (even mini CD's don't fit into suit pockets unfortunately). Morphix base should make this a bit easier, its pain in the backside trying to remove all the unwanted apps from the Knoppix CD (although I have to say that Synaptics filters do make this a whole lot easier).

Whoo! Might even save enough time to play with dvd::rip and Freevo.

Well, i'll be able to throw a whole bunch of new modules (including base) up on the mirror this afternoon, so if you havn't already downloaded it just be patient, i'll let you know...

I have played around with those 200MB minicd's, but never 50MB's, i'll keep my eyes open!
