    Dear rickenbacherus,
I am still newbie at linux-knoppix world so I can't suggesting you good software. You can do that at best !!!

Just one suggestion if you can improve the Greek support (ttf and console fonts, keyboard switching between English - Greek using shift alt combination e.t.c.).

    Best Regards
    Mike Kranidis.

I suppose there's a patch for it somewhere but SATA support is supposed to be in the forthcoming 2.6 Kernel which from all accounts sounds like it will be released soon.

Haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that X-CD-Roast uses a graphical interface to burn DVDs. I could sure use something like that.

    http://www.xcdroast.org/

    Thanks

[Edit] I've also heard that the latest K3B burns DVDs with a graphical interface. In my case, I need it to work with DVD+R and DVD+RW.[/Edit]

I second (third?) the nomination for k3b (latest version, that can burn dvds).

Once I tried installing Knoppix on my hard drive (turned into Debian of course). It booted into a little login menu that allowed you to choose which desktop to use (kde, gnome, etc.). Put that menu in there! (And put all those other desktops on there too; just leave kde the default and you shouldn't confuse people too much.)

And on the hosting issue: Forget ftp. Forget http. Just go with BitTorrent. Never worry about bandwidth costs again.

I'm downloading the latest version of the Knoppix CD iso with BitTorrent as I'm typing this. So far I've download 67MB and have uploaded 94MB to other people. This is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

BTW (just slightly off-topic) did you know that you can now get a dvd burner that can do all five recordable dvd formats for only US$132??? Blew my mind when I saw that...

    dvd::rip

dvd::rip is a great app to backup dvd's, it's the only gui ripper I found for linux, but it needs a lot of gnome dependant libraries and is hard to install under knoppix with only kde...

I would also like to find default versions of games like tuxracer or vegastrike, which are apt-get'able but not allways easy to get running... (cursor gets blocked on launching and I have to restart X for vegastrike...)

Opera is a great browser which is much lighter than mozilla... It would be a pleasure to have it by default...

Shorewall or some default netfilter configuration possibility for routing would be a great idea to make NAT and routers installations easier with knoppix... an optional icmp block, tripwire...

More available services from the menu... why only 4 by default... apache, ftp, irc, ... Isn't linux becoming king of the network???

Some network chat client like amsn... or a program wich is capable of connecting multiple networks (aol, msn, icq, yahoo, irc, ...), like trillian for win***s

Webcam integration would also be a great implementation in my believes...

Finally, the 2.6 kernel seems to have great functions... perhaps a possible choice in the lilo menu?

Anyway... my needs are nothing compared to the accomplished work, knoppix is the best linux version I found for the moment... and I will buy the DVD wheither my requests are included or not...
    I apologize for the spelling,
thank you for your work, please keep it that way

    A couple more suggestions

Privoxy web filtering proxy - http://www.privoxy.org/

muffin - http://muffin.doit.org/ another web filter Java based

You know it would really be great if Knoppix would go the route of MEPIS create a main DVD and/or CD and then a second DVD/CD that has tons more programs to add in, ready to go. That would certainly solve some of the space issuses with a regular CD set, and benefit with the "conversion" process for those migrating from some other OS.

    Hi,
I use mostly LYX for text editing I guess You will put the new release on teh DVD.

It would be great to have a programm fot handlig bibliographic entries like

    tKbibtex
    http://www.cat.csiro.au/cmst/staff/pic/tkbibtex.html

    sixpack
    http://www.santafe.edu/~dirk/sixpack/

Of curse the is the need to configure the pipes (eg for tkbibtex):
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LyX is configured by adding a line like

    \serverpipe "/home/autom/pic/.lyxpipe"
to the ~/.lyx/lyxrc file. This will cause LyX to create two named pipes (FIFOs) called .lyxpipe.in and .lyxpipe.out which are used by the client.
These names should match those used by tkbibtex, set in either the top part of tkbibtex proper, via the .tkbibtexrc file, or the -lyx command line option:

    tkbibtex -lyx .lyxpipe
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will be your customer of curse :-)

From your post, it looks like you don't have a problem with including packages that can't be hosted on Debian because of license issues, therefore I nominate Squeak.

    http://www.squeak.org/index.html

Squeak is AMAZING. Apps written for Squeak will run unmodified on almost any modern platform, from PDAs all the way up to Cray supercomputers, without porting. Its inventors include some of the Xerox PARC wizards who also invented the graphical user interface and a bunch of other stuff we all take for granted.

The only thing keeping Squeak out of Debian right now is its license. It's an open source license, but the license has some cruft in it that the Debian maintainers don't like. The Squeak people intend to fix the license someday.

Another package I would like to see: Rekall.

    http://www.thekompany.com/products/rekall/

This takes care of the MS Access equivalent that j.drake asked for. They just announced they are releasing this under the GPL.

    Synaptic:

    http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/

This is really more for the people who will be using the Knoppix disk to install Debian on their hard drives (that's how I first did it). Why make them do apt-get install synaptic, if you can just put it on the disk for them...

Here's one to keep an eye on: an awesome symbolic math package (similar to Mathematica or Maple or Mathcad) called Axiom.

    http://www.nongnu.org/axiom/

    http://packages.debian.org/unstable/math/axiom.html

The open source version of Axiom is quite new and still under heavy development, but it may reach a usable state soon if it's not there already. I know some math people who are stuck using Windows right now, and I would like to show them Axiom running on Knoppix and blow their minds.

K3B has already been mentioned numerous times. This one is especially important because it will allow people to easily make copies of your Knoppix DVD for their friends.

BitTorrent has also been mentioned. Gotta put the latest version (3.3) of the BitTorrent client on there, if it isn't there already. (And make sure it is installed so that all of the installed browsers will use it automatically when the user clicks on a torrent link.) BitTorrent is important because it lets people download big .iso files and such really efficiently, and because it lets people like you and me distribute big .iso files without having to worry about hosting issues!

I see in your poll that 63% think that $10 is the best price, and 27% think that $15 is the best price. So split the difference, and go for $12.

The existence of BitTorrent and inexpensive ($112) DVD burners means that the number of people who will order a disk for $12 may not be large. But hopefully, as word spreads about Knoppix, the number of people who will order a disk for $12 will gradually increase anyway. Definitely worth doing no matter which way you think about it.

    --------

I think there should be a DVD version of Knoppix that includes all of the packages that have been removed from earlier versions of the CD (except packages that are totally obsolete). What limits are there on the size of a practical Knoppix DVD?

Obviously, there is the 4.7 GB limit.

Before that, you would hit the 2GB limit. Some people are using file systems (FAT32 for example) that cannot hold any file larger than that. Since many potential Knoppix users are current Windows users who cannot even download a file larger than 2GB, it would probably be wise not to piss them off by making your image too big for them to download.

Another limit to consider is the RAM limit. Since Knoppix works by building a virtual partition in RAMdisk with symlinks to the actual files in the clooped read-only image, adding a lot more files to the image will grow the RAMdisk and make less RAM available for actually running the kernel and the apps. Since many potential users are running Win98 and have 512KB of RAM or less, this might prove to be a problem if Knoppix gets too big. (As I understand it, Win98 will choke if you try to run it on a system with more than 512KB of RAM, so adding more RAM may not be an option for some people.) I have no idea how many more packages you can load before this becomes a problem for a significant number of people. So let's find out the hard way...

Once somebody gets a version of a Knoppix DVD available as a BitTorrent, I expect a community will quickly grow around it, expanding it and making new versions frequently. Since BitTorrent makes most hosting issue irrelevant, the only thing keeping people from releasing new versions of the .iso will be the hassle involved with actually building new .iso files. Since new tools are arriving to simplify that particular task, we may soon have an enviable problem: So many different Knoppix DVD .iso files available that it becomes difficult to choose between them!
