I was able to launch Apache with support for PHP using the command /etc/init.d/apache start, and was able to launch mysql too (/etc/init.d mysql start). Upload some MysQL dump from another database, copy the scripts and voila, an Web Server with database support. All, using Knoppix 3.3 LiveCD, without Hdd Installation

One area where Knoppix is weak (IMHO) is in the programmer arena. I imagine you won't include SUN Java because licensing problems, but would be nice if Knoppix included it. Eclipse, would be nice (with a ton of pluggins). Gtk , Programmer Reference documents, examples focused on Web Development (scripts, access to databases), Postgres, Firebird (the database)

Hi, I'm still learning Linux but running into problems finding a Live cd/dvd version with drivers for my NIC preinstalled. I have an Asus AN78X mobo and I have tried alot of different versions but none of them work. Adding driver support for this board would be great!

Ok. Let me see if I get this right. If we pay 15.00 for a Knoppix DVD it covers the cost of the DVD and free CD versions for Who?
I dont have a problem paying 15.00 for a DVD release of Knoppix because I figure it will be a much more complete Linux release. But I would like to know where the rest of the money is going to. And I know it is for free Knoppix CDs. But for who?

I would like to see all the great Linux screen savers inlcuded in KDE and the like for the DVD version of Knoppix.

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec)

Currently my favorite digital audio format.

Sorry but I just don't have the time for this any longer. Besides, Klaus makes much better DVD's than I can.
I hear that a Kanotix DVD may be in the works.
To answer Snow's question about free cd's.....I have for some time now sent many Knoppix cd's to people who otherwise can't afford one or are unable to download an image. I have not based this on any requirements but simply sent one to most anywhere in the world when asked. This too has also come to an end as I simply cannot keep up with the requests any longer. It has turned into a very costly endeavor for me and I am also tired of being accused of profiteering. I can assure you that I have not profited from the sale of any discs.

I second that, I am a n00b who's trying to set up Knoppix on an Epia CL10000 as a home server (an obvious choice if you want some modestly priced modern hardware because you didn't happen to have some old hardware already laying about the place!). I also got the M10000 as that's great for other household jobs. I can at present only dream of the server (CL) streaming any media I chose to the other (M). It's a good dream though for all that!
I am struggling where I may not need to if there was a slightly more n00b friendly way of doing this. Remember n00bs have to do all the stuff the experts do, but also need to have a good linux reference book in one had at the same time too! I bet some experts would also find it tougher than usual under that circumstance!
Anything which makes setting up server oriented and multimedia oriented versions on an Epia would get my vote. I got a motherboard of each type, and don't plan to add any hardware beyond that which they are equipped with as standard (it's all in there somewhere after all!)
BOTH HD installers working would be nice; I only got knx-hdinstall to work, the other one breaks before we get started as it can't seem to see the HD partitions which are there. I am therefore not able to have a more "deb style" install, whatever that actually means (I've seen it expressed as desirable, but not yet seen it explained to precisely why - just compatibility of some kind? Or is there more to it?)
I need a good firewall (a clear gui option would be appreciated here), and a mail server, a web server, maybe an FTP server, and defintiely a news server (granted that's a rarer one probably) I also want it to serve DNS for the lan (bind/bind9?) <shrug>
As a n00b I can't tell you specific packages because, of course, I have not seen them yet, but I know some of the functionality I want to end up with under knoppix. More specific package suggestions from me after only my first week might be quite bad due to inexperience. However I hope these ideas might act as a guide to what some users might find useful though.
Oh, and very good luck with it of course!

Well, about the server stuff, Knoppix includes Apacha + PHP and MySQL. You only have to start them. Launch one console and type:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache start
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start (knoppix 3.4 doesn't include mysql but older versions yes)
And you will have a web server fully operational
In the streaming arena you should try http://dynebolic.org/. This is one live cd focused on Audio, Video and streaming
