installing rpm packages on KNOPPIX

i have downloaded a rpm package from the net, and i want to install that on my knoppix cd, but when i try to install it , it gives me error :-
"cannot open packages index"
what is the problem ?

You can't just write to the cd, regardless of the type of package you've downloaded.
If you want to add it to the cd you'll have to read the remastering how-to on this website. You might want to check that the package doesn't come as a deb version (for Debian), otherwise you'll probably also need the package alien - a Debian package for dealing with rpm's
Maybe you could give more details as to what the rpm is that you so urgently want....

Before rpm will work you'll need to:
rpm --initdb
