    Prof Knopper, last release 9.1 DVD on the 25th Jan 2021. 3 years+ ...

Please consider releasing a newer version.

Can't add new packages before updating a lot of packages.

You have many times been informed of my affection for knoppix persistent since 2013, and my using knoppix since 2007.

Yes, it seems that as we go forward in time the release period also grows. This is because there are more and more complicated software and bigger software sizes. So, it is hard to keep below a DVD size. A solution would be to provide basic CD size ISO and modules (KNOPPIX1, KNOPPIX2...) could be downloaded separately with extra software. Separate modules for games, office software, graphics, programming, multimedia, etc. So, everybody could download only the software they need.

Maybe this is not the right place, but I'd like to recommend some other "Knoppix-like" distros for "impatient people." Some of them tried by me. They have the merit of being true 64-bit systems, which is very important since nowadays they develop mainly 64-bit software, including appimages. Another benefit: they use only 1 Debian version, so you can install any Debian package. Knoppix uses more Debian versions; in Knoppix updates and new software installations are not recommended since you could break the system. Anyway, if you need to install something in Knoppix first try it in live mode.

    DebianDog https://debiandog.github.io/doglinux/
Until 2020 they provided ISOs, but now there is a better solution: build script, you can generate your custom ISO. Their software choice for ISOs (and for build script) is not the best (mtPaint instead of GIMP, GNOME MPlayer instead of SMPlayer, etc.) but by using the build script you can specify which software to install.

    Exe GNU/Linux https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=exe
Based on Devuan (Debian without systemd (as Knoppix)), uses TDE, a very handy and light desktop. It would be nice for Knoppix, too.

    Legacy OS https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=legacy
The fat Antix. Lot of software, light system.

    Zephix https://zephix-linux.sourceforge.io/
    Modular approach.

Thank you, szzsqing1, for your kind post with info. You are a new, young, energetic member. So perhaps you overlooked my earlier post many years back, when I began using Knoppix persistent on HDD following Mr. Schulz's post, regularly installing packages when required. I miss Mr. Schulz very much.

I have used knoppix extensively, but presently can't install newer programs from the old repositories, as newer versions are coming. Knoppix had packages from all of the Stable, testing, sid(unstable) bur probably not experimental.

The problem is that with time the stable slips into oldstable and then oldoldstable and then they are no longer available for download. I had this problem with 7.2.0 which I used for many years. It had me immensely satisfied.

Then knoppix stayed with the old initd system, while debian switched to systemd.

I have been searching. There is no replacement for Knoppix yet. Debian Live is good, but can't be made into a persistent system with native tools. There are 3rd party systems available. But I haven't tested them. I could try with bootcd to create an iso, but I haven't tested yet. The demand for a lot of time and effort puts me off.

Ptof Knopper is around my age, so he should still be active and productive. The only issue is that he doesn't release new versions as often as he used to.

So I tried Prof. Knopper if he was still listening ...

You're welcome. The forum is not very active nowadays but at least it is not dead... Yes, Knoppix is quite unique, but there are distros which have certain features of it or in other things are better. If you need persistence, DebianDog, Porteus, Antix, Legacy OS, Puppy are good for this purpose, though they can be used as true live systems, too. They.have even better persistence management since there are options to save the changes only at certain intervals or at shutdown. Which is good for the health of storage device. This could be implemented also for Knoppix by changing its /init script. In addition to my previous post, I mention Q4OS and Trisquel too, which systems are intended rather for installation but can be run in live mode, too. Otherwise for every Ubuntu (Trisquel) and Debian (Q4OS) based live distro can be used persistence which, like Knoppix persistence, save changes continuously. Of course, to try, test, learn a new system needs time, but this applies to everything...

Thank you, szzsqing1, for your kind post with some more info.

But I couldn't explain Knoppix's uniqueness to you. Let me try once more.

There are two disk images for a Knoppix ISO. One is the ISO that one downloads. When the ISO is extracted one gets another image.

There is a special provision in Knoppix. Please search my made-easy post easing up the particular method of Mr. Werner Schulz.

The most important simple text file is knoppix-data.inf. this is a one-line file directing Knoppix to find the persistent storage in the partition mentioned therein.

One didn't need to use an temporary, rather small, image file for persistence.

One could use a dedicated partition for the purpose.

This is an extra-ordinary system. Mr. Schulz, Prof. Knopper and the Team deserve all admiration due to them and more for this wonderful innovation.

I am indebted to them for giving me an unprecedented freedom from the atrocities of the proprietary universe, particularly, Doze-based echo-chamber.

It is unfortunate that I didn't donate money, but this had more to do with an antagonistic conversion rate of 1:60-70, I feel very sorry for not having paid anything for this wonderful software.

The west exploited my nation, divided her into tiny smaller countries, drained her off her resources for 450 years, destroyed her rich culture and industries, shifted manufacture and scientific accomplishments from her, and left her nearly a destitute. Before the west my nation was considerably weakened by the sand-drinking raiders for 399 years before the west came.

You could find the atrocities in numerous books, The Case For India, by Will Durant, The History of India, as Told by Its Own Historians, byHenry Miers Elliot, The Era of Darkness, by Shashi Tharoor, Breaking India, by Rajiv Malhotra, and so on.

Even after she gained her independence, she was left to the stooges of the Empire to continue plundering her, and the control of the empire passed on from the Brit Deep State to the US Deep State.

Some groups used unnatural force and means to break our social fabric, the same way as they did with the Hutus and the Tutsis, gained control over our social and the industrial system, changed the monetary equation, and still draining us off our resources using this monetary game.

When Vasco da-Gama was led to Bharat from the Cape of Good Hope by an Indian trading company ships he had recorded in her journals that those merchant ships were significantly larger than his own armada.

Perhaps you don't know that Bharat preceded Newton and Leibiz in Calculus. Europe couldn't compute with the Greco-Roman numerical system. They learnt mathematics from the plundering sand-drinkers who looted us. The laws of gravity was discovered 1500 years before Newton. Newton was essentially a forger. These references could help:
