Newbie needs help. not readin CDROM

Alright. I downloaded the ISO, burnt it onto two cds at different speeds and checked the MD5 sum and thier both fine. So the CD's are fine. When i put it into my first computer, it booted and gave me the message

    CAN'T FIND KNOPPIX FILESYSTEM, SORRY.
NOW RUNNING A CUT DOWN SHELL ETC......
i cant remeber if thats what the second line looks like but its along those lines. It also gave me a list of simple commands i could use. These were mount, umount, cat and some others. Anyway, so i tried again and put the failsafe command in after alot of other attempts and it booted perfectly. Gave me everything and was working fine. So the CD is definatly in working order.

Then, i tried to run it on my other PC becuase thats the one i actually downloaded it for. But firstly, it didn't want to boot off the CD so i made a knoppix bootdisc on the other computer. So i booted up on the Other PC again using the Bootdisc this time but i got the same error as above (cant find knoppix filesytem etc..) So then i tried the failsafe and it didn't work again. Then i tried about ten different cheatcodes and that didn't work.

I read the cheatcodes page and it mentioned the trouble i was having. It says, "If your KNOPPIX CD makes strange noises during boot.....In some cases defective IDE controllers cause this error if you have DMA enabled." This is most likely what it is. I have tried dissabling DMA in the Bios, that doesn't work, iv tried doing it in windows ME but that didn't do anything either (not that i thought it would). Does anyone have any ideas on how i can get the thing to just boot from the CDROM? Or is thier anything else i should try. Im actually a new user to linux so im pretty happy that i managed to track it down to the CDROM myself. But now i need some experienced help.

    Hi,

1.) You can try a "poor man's install". Copy your CD onto a FAT(32) Partition (ntfs _DOES_NOT_ work!) of your PC and boot with your bootfloppy. If it works you have to blame the CDROM drive / dma / cable etc.
2.) Maybe you have to put your CDROM drive on the other IDE channel. But first try solution #1 and tell us how it works.

It sounds like you have not burned an iso image to cd, but simply just burned the iso file to CD. You probably just have a single file on the CD with an ISO extension. If you burnt the image properly you would have a whole bunch of files and directories on the CD. Read how to burn an ISO image in the help for your buring software.

    Hi,

I don't think that there is only one *.iso file on CD,
When i put it into my first computer, it booted and gave me the message...
    because this would _never_ boot.

horo sounds like the man with the plan. I will try doing this and see how it goes. Oh, and trust me ALEXLAWROW, there is not a single iso on the cd. Like horo said, it would not have booted on my other PC. Ill let you know how it works out.

I have hit another problem. How would i copy that file to the new partition? The CD does not read in windows, dos and when i tried this toms boot disc (www.toms.net/rb) it was unable to detect my CDROM. Does anyone have any ideas? I followed the instuctions on the poormans install but like i said, its no help when my PC cant even detect the cdrom (under linux that is)
