    simple Noob Question

    hey
this is the first time i've used any variant of linux..
and the gr8 thing was it worked the first time
teh gr8 knoppix...even all the config with mycable modem was done automatically...guess that wats so cool about it...

I downloaded amsn and some how found a way to run it...
but the thing is when i downloaded it i made a folder and put the files in ramdisk i think with the other folders being desktop and somethign else....

the question is where is this file stored the RAM or the harddrive partition...??
and will those files disappear if i reboot(yes/no)?

    thnx guys...and hail knoppix.

    Zombi3,

I think I can answer that, even though I am just getting my feet wet in the Knoopix World...

    Answer:
If you are running Knoppix from the CD - YES - when you reboot, the files will go bye-bye. Chances are, the files exist on the RamDrive. Even if you installed/downloaded the files/programs to a Windows (fat16/32) hard drive - the problem is that Knoppix, or the Kernel of Linux, the OS, resides on the CD - and gets placed back fresh each time you boot, back into the RamDrive.

If you installed Knoppix from the CD to your hard drive, and are booting w/o the CD - then NO - when you reboot the files are part of the Kernel, or the file system controled by Knoppix, or more appropriatly, Debian.

    Summary:
Since you stated that you poped the CD in, I assume you are running from the CD, and thus, on the RamDrive - which evaporates when you reboot/shutdown Knoppix.

    Hope this helps,
    Cuddles

If you were trying to find out something about Windows, you'd still be on hold.

    How true!
Oh, and you'd be out $100. And, you still may not get your question answered! :P

The reason I held off on this question is because I wasn't sure about the "saving configuration" stuff. There is an option to save stuff to the hard drive, but I haven't used it -- I have a full Knoppix HD install.

I can confirm that. I got a service call today (win 98SE user) that said that MS wasn't going to answer unless they paid for the support, because it is an outdated OS. They were on the phone for a long time and got disconnected 5 times! It was only a "how do I connect to the internet" question.
