usb external modem not found - help

info center finds the external usb "softmodem" - but i cant locate it with kppp under devices...

yes, first it was with an lt winmodem, now its with external usb modem.

problem is that i am transfering any solutions, of working stuff from a "dumb" webbie tv screen over to my pc - so posting output from anything is going to be troublesome, if not very diffiult.

how can i get knoppix/debian to get to the modem, and get connected, so that i can at least relay data directly to posting, if not a workaround, get the modem happy.

Ok, I've got my old system sitting next to the Knoppix/Debian 3.3 (new system) - running.

Info Center reports the modem as such:
SGS Thomson electronics (0x483)
56K Softmodem (0x7554)

I ran around looking in the dmesg output, and it appears that the usb router hub (usb.c) is seeing it - I have tried everything in KPPP under device, from tty to ttyI, to acm, etc... I can't seem to locate where the usb hub has placed the device, and then I assume I need to make a "link" from /dev/modem to this? (like I did with the WinModem on this system)

But, for the life of me, I can't figure out where to start, or find the device I need to link to....


Anyone? Can someone help me get my new "wiz-bang, super-dooper, red hot" system up and gettin on the net?

You don't name the manufacturer, Thomson SGS could just be chipset manufacturers.
Anyway a googling on the model finds this:

In that case you're lucky since they provide a linuxdriver with readme, but I can't tell if it's the right one.

Knoppix comes with acm driver that works with some modems.
You would then have to do as root.
$modprobe acm (to load the drivermodule, and hopefully the modems lights turn on)
$lsmod (to see if it's loaded)
$mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM0 c 166 0 (to set up a device node)
$ln -s /dev/usb/ttyACM0 /dev/modem (to link it so that kppp finds it as /dev/modem)

Hope something works out.

In the meantime you should probably avoid anything that says softmodem, they're usually winmodems, though some work with linux too.

I'm not actually quite sure about knoppix and modems since I connect through eth0 to adsl.

Tried above, failed to activate, nor allow minicom or KPPP to find and use modem...

A look at www.jaton.com does suggest that you have a winmodem and they don't seem to have drivers for linux.

You could try taking it back to the shop and ask them to change it to a hardwaremodem, or hope that someone has managed to make a similar piece of equipment work in linux.

External serial port modems are usually fine with linux but usb ones are mostly paperweight if they are softmodems made for windows.

Well, google around and you might find a driver.

Its going back to the store... I spent $40 more than a standard "winmodem" with the promise that this was a "standard" modem. So, tomorrow its going back, and this time an external serial modem is taking its place.

BTW - since installing 3.3, i've started to get crashes, Crash Guard within KDE yells about something causing a crash, and that "something" is sending "signals" to software to have them shutdown - first time is was lib[something]c++ - and all I was doing was viewing the KMenu - nothing running. The next time I was playing Penguin Solitaire, and some service sent a sigsys[something] that signals software/services to abort.

I since blew away 3.3, and went back to 3.2 - but that too is having similar problems. I can be logged in as Root, do anything, or nothing, and the system goes to black screen and causes the user to be logged out, and the LOGIN screen appears - = - I think my new system has some serious problems. Either processor, memory, hard drive, or installed OS issues. Could be on-motherboard issues, or even the motherboard itself....

Oh well, so much for a nice start of the year...
