You might have a system that needs ACPI in order to allocate some resources.
I'm typing this on a laptop that has the same problem with the sound system
when running a kernel without ACPI. (like the kernel on ordinary Knoppix CD:s)
Are you gojng to run from CD only or have you done (or planning to do)
a hard disk install ?

You might want to try to boot with this cheat code:
knoppix pci=biosirq *(plus any other necessary cheat codes)
~rock

Now I use knoppix from hardisk. witch pci=biosirq no efect.

Ok, the next step would be to get a kernel with acpi instead of apm.
These look like useful instructions (I haven't tried them myself though)

I use new kernel from debian> kernel-source...2.4.22-all..10.deb.
in this is the acpi too. Now I have the i810_audio, but my xmms work not.
It cann't find the os sound modul. And I have it in my kernel. And the sound in kde run.

That's because KDE takes over the audio device. You need the arts plugin for xmms get it like this: (as root)
apt-get install xmms-arts
Then start xmms and configure it to use the "aRts Driver"
