Good god, help us out!!!!
Why can't you guys help us (owners of a USB-adsl-modem)?
We can't help it.
I can't find the correct installation files.
My modem:
Topcom USB Webr@cer 851 pstn
When Knoppix is loaded, the power light AND the 'activity'-light are on. Wich is not usual. In windows the 'activity' light only works when I have made a connection.
So don't just tell us to buy another modem. What do you guys say to people with really big problems? Buy a new computer or something?
Ok, I am a linux-noob , and I own a USB-modem, but does that mean I do not deserve help? Wow, good forum...

RealNitro,
Chill out. Just because you haven't gotten an answer to your question yet doesn't mean that people here are unwilling to help you. If I had the information to help you with this issue I would gladly give it to you, but since I don't have any usb modems I have no experience to draw from. Moreover ALL the work done by Klaus Knopper, those at the linuxtag site, and this site is done by volunteers who have their own jobs, families, and projects to deal with. No one is paid to give support on this forum. Please consider this before you begin posts with the question, "Why can't you guys help us?" and don't demand that a comunity that freely gives of it's time to help you come up with an immediate fix for your problem.
Having said this there are a lot of knowable people on this forum and most of them are quite generous with their time and knowledge. If someone knows the answer to your question they will help you.
You can also try the irc channel and see if anyone in there has some info to help you. But be courteous.
Until you get some more replies I suggest you spend some time searching google and see if you can find out what level of compatibility other linux users have with this modem (don't just assume it's a problem with Knoppix).
If you find out how to get this modem to work, please come back here and share that information with others.
If you have to have this modem working now and if you don't have time to wait for others to reply (BTW I see that this is your first post to the forum - try waiting a bit), then try investing in a ethernet card. They are really quite cheap (around $10 US). Otherwise buy a Linux distribution that provides support for their product.

Thanks,
Sorry for my agressive post.
I just wanted a good, straight answer. In the other posts no-one says that the problem has not been solved...
Usually I am more courtious, but seeing all those people getting no (or unusefull) answers made me mad. I know the people on this forum aren't paid, but posting in an agressive way gave me a good answer. When there is no solution, too bad, but just say so.
Thanks for the advice, I will search google, and if I would get my modem to work, I promise I will post the way I did it.
btw: Knoppix rocks!!!

Hey that sounds good. I sure hope there is someone who can help you out. Like I said try the irc channel too - that way you can get some interactive feedback. I agree Knoppix does rock!

topcom usb modem
There are 84 results for topcom usb modem for linux using google, in several languages, some german. have a browse through them, if you get a page with your particular modem mentioned you could politly ask on http://www.linuxtag.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl to see if someone could translate the page for you.

Problems:
Thanks for the information everybody!
My main problem now is this:
I have to unpack a file, after an hour I found how
That's OK now. Then I have to use the command 'make', that works too. But then I have to give 'make install' as command, this doesn't work. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that Knoppix runs from a cd. Or maybe I should extract the files in the 'root'?
I got my info from http://eciadsl.sourceforge.net/
The readme tells me to connect myself as 'root', how do I do that in Knoppix?
There are several drivers available on the net, but installing them is the main problem now.
Some other questions:
What is the irc channel?
Is it possible to use other linux-prgrams in Knoppix (installing them)?

ADSL Modems in Linux
ADSL USB Modems in Linux are a bastard. The good thing however is that there is a package called eciADSL that when installed can offer compatability with most broadband usb modems....
It has rpm,.deb packages and more
get it here.

Lol, it's weird to see this thread popping up after such a while. That first post was ages ago. I never got that modem working under knoppix, btw, and on my new computer knoppix won't even boot (SATA harddisk, I hope I'll be able to boot knoppix 3.4).
