How to remove KDE and reinstall KDE 3.1.5?
Hey all!
In my enthusiasm to try out KDE 3.2, I tried to install it using the debian packages in the press release, at download.kde.org.
It half-worked. My computer will load KDE 3.2 (but not from boot. I have to manually startx, and then it gives me an error about being unable to start kdeinit, but then it works), and many programs work... but LOTS is uninstalled and missing. Like k3b. or Kmail (nope, no Kontact either). or Ark! Heck, it even uninstalled mplayer for some reason.
So.... how can I remove KDE from my system and get the working KDE 3.1.5 that Knoppix installed back on my system?
Or, if you think it's possible, how can I get KDE 3.2 working?
Thank you in advance SO very much.

You should be able to get the 3.2 going how exactly did you install with apt or dpkg? You should check to see what you have installed now for both 3.1 and 3.2 use COLUMNS=125 dpkg -l | grep 3.2.0 for the 3.2 for 3.1 put 3.1.[345] on the end of the line. If you want to try some other non-official .deb packages then you can use this line in your /etc/apt/sources.list:
From the looks of the repository now it looks like Muesli has finished building the 3.2 final so you may want to give them a try. One last thing the packages are built for a 686 processor or better.

Dang! Beat me to it.
I just followed your advice in the other KDE thread (checking for old 3.1.5 packages with dpkg).
Rebooted, most things are working fine now in KDE 3.2.
Problem: Login screen is stretched across screen as a white blob (I blindly entered my password and hit enter to get past). If I go to edit the login screen, it displays NO fonts (just blank boxes) with no options to change font.
Problem: It still gives an error "Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation." Hit okay to that and the ksplash screen is displayed, starts up fine.
Any more advice?
and Thank you for such prompt help!!
edit: the font problem seems wide-spread. Konqueror won't display text on many pages, and konsole's default font is invisible-- Only custom fonts actually show up.

Garyng replied in the other thread and said he has seen the same problem with the bitmap fonts being loaded but I do not see any such problems on my install but it is not based on Knoppix it is just pure Sarge/SID from Debian and I do have the bitmap fonts loading as well so it could be something related to the configuration in Knoppix. Just a thought have you run the fix-fonts.sh from Kano's script page I had a knoppix test install that I installed the 3.2 release candidates on and did not have the problem you are experiencing and I had run that script on it. That kdeinit sounds real strage though did you check to see what you have installed for the 3.2?

About the font problem, there are so many minor version of QT which can make things very confusing. some version of the library is ok(I think 3.1) but a few newer ones (3.1.1 may be) screws things. Then 3.2 seems to be ok again last I checked(but that has other issue like not able to display chinese).
My fixed so far is just don't include the bitmap fonts in the fontconfig and things are looking fine. At first, I thought it has to do with stable/unstable but after many tests, I found the only difference made is QT(I think it is the libqt3-mt package). I can even just replace the .so and the problem will go away.
BTW, my KDE was from kde.org(woody). Haven't had time to install 3.2 yet, just 3.1.4
as for the kdeinit, you may try to remove the .kde directory(may be some others too) in the home. I encountered this kind of error before and it is usually some bogus left over stuff.

comforting..
So, it's comforting to know at least that others are seeing _exactly_ the same (white blob, no fonts and kdeinit errors!) I'm installing knoppix again in work rather that experiment with my personnal pc )) ..
I like the QT font idea! sounds like the culprit..
was getting from download.kde.org too.
Cheers,
Bill

No wonder you are getting the errors those packages are for Woody not the Sarge/SID mix that Knoppix is based on. You need to use packages that are built for those branches if you want to try from here:
By adding the line in your sources list you will have better success. Note: The packages are compiled for a 686 or better processor.

Thanks very much for putting this source up Stephen. I got it from your Lounge post last night and got KDE 3.2 up and running. I really like 3.2 alot. And I had no font issues or anything.
I found the easiest way to install it was to add the source that Stephen mentioned and then go into Synaptic and temporarily set it so that the default is set to Experimental. Then it will show you which packages are available for 3.2.
The only issue that I came across was that I had to force the install of one package (libxv1). But that wasn't a problem. KDE 3.2 is great though.

Thanks Stephen, I guess my problem came from a cut and paste of a google search of a possible apt sources list.
I've currently got the following:
Will this do?

You going to need unstable as well:
And you may as well have this one so you can get mplayer and things like that upgraded:
