    Top 3 best E-mail servers?

Hello, I am sorry for using this site to ask this question, but I have found the best support for all questions related to Linux on this site and only this site.

My question is: Which is the best 3 Email Servers in the linux world and if possible the best ones for Windows.

I am trying to create a web server that hosts a forum using phpBB with a possible WAMP or LAMP setup. I need the Email server to work with phpBB.

If there are any Email servers that work on both platforms that would be even better. That way I can practice using it in Windows and the migrate when ever I need to.

(I know nothing about setting up an email server, so keep that in mind when telling me the ones that are the best)

Thank-you for any help you give.

I think you created yourself a paradox....
It depends what you mean by 'best'

Exchange is very popular which even I have to admit makes it best in popularity....

The real prob is if you want REAL email servers windows land has a few but they ARE REALLY EXPENSIVE. Making a secure server isn't trivial in WinDowsLand

In the *nix world there are sendmail, postfix and qmail....
However email in linux land is either much simpler or more complex, depending how you look on it....
That is its more modular so you can deliver with one method and send with another etc.
In this respect qmail is probably the 'simplest' since it actually does everything, by using IMP (www.horde.org) it becomes php compatible.

I'm not sure whether or not I'm qualified to say which one is "the best" for your situation, but I have found postfix to really work well for my needs. I used sendmail for some time and found it to be a bit buggy. There are security concerns with sendmail as well. If you want to try out postfix it's as easy as "apt-get install postfix".

    Ok there is another problem...
    -------------------
Example so you understand what I am looking for:
Lets say that I purchased the rights to use www.myownlinuxdomain.com
I have this domain name hosted by a third party web host. But I want to get a dynamic DNS sevice and host that URL on my own box with my current ISP connection.

    Part One

    First question:
What does "parked" mean and how do I change it or get them to "Unpark" it?

    Second question:
What stops people from "parking" a URL of someone elses and one that I have not paid for?

    -------------------
    Part Two

    Third question:
Now that I have a Dynamic DNS set up with www.myownlinuxdomain.com and an e-mail server, will any *@myownlinuxdomain.com be routed to my email server (according to my email settings of course) or will it go looking elsewhere?

    Fourth question:
How do emails get routed, by ISP or by domain name?

    -------------------
    Part Three

    Fifth question:
Is there an easy website that I can go to so that I can learn more about this? ...or should I just buy a gun?

About part 2: that's what DNS MX records are for. But you should not really need to learn about that, your DNS service should take care of it. I imagine one of the things they'll ask you is where you want the mail for that domain to be routed to, and that should be it.
