user not authorized to run the X server

After an installation to hd (V3.3-2004-02-09), when i launch startx from user knoppix i get:

X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.

running from root works fine.
i tried "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common", allowing anybody to start x server. no way, same error.

You could -- although this shouldn't be necessary -- try creating a console group and adding yourself to it.

Try setting allowed_users=anybody
It seems like console can be a problem if you run screen so that the command "tty" gives pts instead of tty.
