Wrong Belgian azerty keyboard
A problem which still remains unsolved with Knoppix is the wrong belgian
azerty keyboard layout which has crept in a lot of Linux distributions
lately: if you want a backslash you have to press ALT-GR )
and the normal backslash key combination gives a |.
The reason for is that the file /KNOPPIX/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/be is wrong.
The right version of that file is available at:
http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/~ch...ype=text/plain
How can we get this correction in the next Knoppix-release?
sincerely,
Hugo Coolens
p.s. there is also a link to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/be

Sigh. Yes, I posted this months ago on the knoppix mailing list - to no avail. In the same department, starting knoppix with the "lang=be" cheatcode is half-broken. It gives you the right keyboard (be-latin1) and xkeyboard(be), but sets LANG=be, which is bielo-russian! This causes hard to track errors with some apps, eg the dsl config tools complaining about unsupported locales in the /etc/ppp/peers/something file, which renders connection impossible. I wished LANG was set to C, in /etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig. Similarly, the OpenOffice version included with knoppix has known keyboard problems, whereby compose keys don't seem to work, which is really annoying for international usage (acented characters).
Generally, I have to say I feel this kind of "small problems" tends to last longer than it should in successive knoppix releases. The bugzilla system mentioned on the front page of this very site seems abandoned - at least I got no reply when I recently asked on the aforementioned ML - plus I just tried and got a 404 reply. Problems reported on the ML are addressed or not depending on their technical interest to the developers -- eg KK primarily. I am not looking into the mouth of a gift horse; knoppix is a fantastic achievement and certainly paved the way for other live-cd's. It still is a lot of fun for trying out really recent linux developments, but I'd heartily recommend mepis for a more polished desktop experience and certainly for HD installations. There, it's said ;-)
