    n00b + knoppix + noose + neck

Am attempting to get Knoppix v3.3 2004 02 09 to run on a sony viao
pcv-rx670 and am (almost) at the end of my rope.

I was marginally successful with the 2.78 SDT distribution. Booted ,
saved config to floppy. found out the dlink 520+ TI chipset is not so
    friendly... i made some progress.

Foolishly assuming that a transition to 3.3 would be a small step up, i
burned the disc and went for it.

The gosh darn 3.3 CD wont boot. the vaio ignores it. the 2.78 CD boots
without a bootfloppy. i tried the mkfloppy.bat and lo and behold it boots
... until it gets to the "cant find knoppix : limited shell" error message.
Cant seem to find what I am looking for in the FAQ, docs or forum. Many
similar things (HD installs - which i cannot do) but nothing quite as
    specific as I need.

Knoppix is just too darn hard - I am ready to give up on Knoppix and
retreat back to the safety and comfort of my Mac and os X .

i cant get into the bios on the viao - i dont know if sony locked them down somehow...

besides if it was really a bios issue wouldnt i have the same problem with the 2.78 version?

Heh. Just try and get OSX to run on a Viao!

    I'd try a google for

    linux viao pcv-rx670

Linux on laptops is a difficult area 'cos the damn things tend to break all the rules, but don't give up yet!

i wouldnt dream of crossing the mac / pc boundary... too much like the edge of the universe.

insofar as the VAIO, its a mini tower... one floppy (a two HD's (c & d) and two cd's (f & g) ... and the 2.78 distro i have will boot from CD. The 3.3 distro wont boot from cd, so i used the mkfloppy.bat util on the CD and the floppy starts the boot process . i get to the splash screen , see the penguin & then get dropped into a limited shell. something about it not finding KNOPPIX.

I'm guessing that there is some kind of pointer on the boot floppy that directs it to start up knoppix from the CD and somewhere along the way its either getting misdirected ... maybe because of my drive letter being G ... or something. Like I said, this is a guess.

I am curious to find out.

have you checked that the cd is not damaged (or a fingerprint in the wrong place)? or that the md5sum is wrong, both have made things go bad for me on occations.

Good one Ok, usually good, but this time googling...

How about trying the CD in another computer to see if it works.
