    Another Password Thread

    Hi Folks

I purchased the Knoppix CD v3.3 a couple of months ago and getting along fairly well with it.
I really appreciate the effort that has gone into Knoppix and all the time you folks take to answer newbie questions.
Having successfully set up a persistent home and a myconfig file on my Windows FAT 32 drive I feel I have basic grasp of knoppix. In addition I was able to successfully configure my graphics, sound and network cards.
It is the last item that brings me to this endless Knoppix password annoyance.
In the numerous Document readme's and FAQ's it basically states the password for "knoppix" is "knoppix".
For some obscure reason that just does not work for v3.3. When you try to change a software parameter that requires a root or a *knoppix* password “knoppix” yields an incorrect response from the system.

After searching the forums for answers I have found this reply by SUO works:

Open up a console window. At the prompt, type:
    “sudo passwd root”
Enter password twice. Now root has a password.
    -SUO

Ok so far so good. The above has allowed me to configure knoppix to my system and save all the custom settings to “myconfig” file. Life is good? Well almost.
    Now back to networking.
    In KDE> Kmenu> KNOPPIX> Services> Start Samba Server.

    You get a message:
“export all hardrives so they can be mounted, read, written from the remote machine”
When “yes” is clicked, indeed your linux computer is now visible on a Windows TCP/IP network under “workgroup” and the machine “knoppix”
When you try to access the networked knoppix machine form the Windows side, guess what? Windozs asks you for the “knoppix” password.
Neither “knoppix” or your chosen “root” password will work.

We seem to be going around and around on this password issue. I think this is confusing and frustrating for lot of new users hence the high number of hits on any password thread.

Could some of you fine Linux heads please provide us newbies with some clear correct and unified procedures on this perpetual annoyance.

    Thank You
    Dennis

Any suggestions on what to try?
Network recovery of a crashed hardrive would be an important use of knoppix for me.

I'm not sure but I've always assumed that the knoppix password is also missing by default.
Have you tired setting it to something with "sudo passwd knoppix" first ?

Windozs asks you for the “knoppix” password.
Neither “knoppix” or your chosen “root” password will work.
You also have to change the Samba password.
    Code:

    # smbpasswd whizzard
    New SMB password:
    Retype new SMB password:
    Password changed for user whizzard.
    Password changed for user whizzard.
