problems with alsa alsa-autoconfig doesn't seem to work
I am being driven slightly crazy trying to get the sound working on my HD install of knoppix 3.3.
It seems to work fine from the live CD
after reading the threads, I have run /etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig (many times!) - it says

Creating snddevices...
Setting default volumes......
no sound though.... And yes, I did check aumix - the volume WASN'T up, it was at zero - but that didn't help either
modprobe emu10k1 tells me:

It looks as though the soundcard isn't seen by isapnp or a scan of the PCI bus- it doesn't see the built-in sound either - however the game port on the soundcard is seen!!

any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm thinking of trying a different PCI slot in case it might solve some IRQ conflict, but at this point i'm just guessing and trying anything......

here is a little more info - I ran /etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig again and then insmod emu10k1 in hopes of getting mor einfo on the problem
The REALLY wierd thing is that on bootup, I see info on alsa and the emu10k1 module flash by on the screen - something like "module loaded with warnings" but I don't see any of that info in any logs that I look at!
My CD player can see the CDs, and they appear to play but there is no sound. Another wierd thing - i CAN play an mp3 that lives on the WinDoz side of my system....

Could well be an irq issue. I'd try setting the bios to "non plug and play OS" and run
/etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig
again.

You do not want the emu10k1 module loaded at all it will interfere with the alsa. If you have an onboard sound card then check to make sure that you have disabled it in the BIOS then try the alsa. You can also check in the /etc/modutils/alsa (it may be alsa1 in knoppix IIRC) and see if the settings are similar to this.

And have you gone into the Control Center in KDE and then Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System -> Hardware tab and changed the setting from Autodetect to ALSA then applied the changes the Autodetect seems not to work for me.

I tried disabling PnP - didn't help - I then tried disabling the on-board sound, and that didn't work either. Looking at the info below and comparing it to Stephen's, the difference I see is that "Module used by" seems to be 0 on mine and a number on his
I didn't change the KDE control center stuff yet, I'm more of a fluxbox guy - for sound stuff I used XMMS (which worked fine on Live CD)
here's some more info: Note - this was run after turning off on-board sound
An interesting note is that the sound worked on the live CD with both cards enabled... and that info showed up in /etc/modutils/alsa-0.9-knoppix IIRC

One thing that worked for me (although the /etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig stuff did too) and for Cuddles (where it seems to have solved some of the issues she had around ALSA) is to install from a CD booted with
boot: knoppix alsa
from a Konsole.
Why this works is beyond me............

Even though it says do not edit I would put this in it anyway it is missing the /dev/dsp and snd-slot-0 aliases then run the update-modules again.

Did it, rebooted, didn't work
What about the Used by 0 issue (where yours reads used by 1 or 2) referred to in a previous post in relation to the lsmod command? I don't know what that implies.

That tells you the module is in use. What does the lsmod command look like now was there any change? You should go into KDE and check to see if the sound works there just to make sure it is not fluxbox.
