How to update the hardware autodetection database

    hi,

I have a bt878 capture card that required additional options to make it work under debian/knoppix. However , knoppix 3.3 would just simply modprobe the bttv without any options. Although I can specific the options through the kernel cmd interface , I would like to update the knoppix's hardware database directly. So that I can contribute my work for next version of knoppix.

    Thanks for any advise.

    more details

Could you post more details, what to do for getting Knoppix running with the bttv card?
Probably U have the solution for my problem.... My system hangs with the Twinhan DVB Card ( bttv chip).... My solution on this time: remove the card from system. Was this your Problem too?

    Hi,

The problem for knoppix is that it won't probe module with parameters. I think your system was not hang , but just waiting the bttv module to getting loads in the system.(It takes 20 mins to boot up in my system) The usual solution is to load i2c-algo-bit module with option "bit_test=1 ". However , it must be added through the cheat code... the hardware autodetection engine can not help.

btw , may I know what is the modal no/name of your DVB card? I think it need to maintain a list of bttv hardware especially for taiwan's product.

    benlau,

Glad you want to contribute back to help Knoppix's hardware detection. You'll probably be able to do much more good by posting to the Knoppix developers mailing list.

Hi, I have subscribed the mailing list already.

However , the response from Klaus is that he choices to remove the card's ID from the database. So Knoppix won't probe the bttv in the startup.

    I got a bt878 card too, knoppix 3.4 and kernel 2.6.5.

I don't need to pass a parameter to the i2c-... but to the bttv-module:
    Code:
    modprobe bttv card=42 tuner=1
Of course card will differ on your system, and tuner maybe too.
Since my desktop is shutdown and closed, I can't tell you the manufactor.

Benlau: It needs 20 min to boot your system??? How fast is your processor?
It needs 30 sec to boot mine!

That is not the problem of my computer , 99.99% of time spent on the initializing of bttv module(i2c-algo-bit probing in fact). It boots quite fast(around 40s?)when turned bit_test on. However , the bttv module won't work until I passed card=77 to it. So I think the hwsetup program should be enhanced for bttv card...
