    HOWTO: Speedtouch USb (Idiots guide, by an idiot!)

    I'm a linux newb, and I know the trouble I had trying to get my speedtouch adsl modem to work in linux, so now it's working, I've written a howto for people in the same situation - this is so simple, it's just quite had to find on the net!
    1)Download script from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=68502
    2)Extract the .tar.gz file to your home directory (Right click and click extract) (or other directory, it's just easier to find in home!)
    3)Download mgmt.o from http://www.sprinkles.me.uk/mgmt.o
    4) place file in home/speedtouch-conf/firmware
    5)open a konsole (its a blue box with a white border with some gold lines on the panel)
    6)type su
    7)Type in your root password (if you haven't set one yet, click the button next to the start applications button, click root shell and type passwd
    type cd speedtouch-conf
    9)type [b] sh speedtouch.sh
    10) enter information (username password etc. for your isp)
    11) Hopefully, Enjoy The Net!

    Thanks. This howto seems to work on my hd install knoppix. But when I try to connect it says something like:
    "Error 237. Another device/program is already accesing the modem"

    I am very newbie. Any suggestion?

    I'm not sure - try unplugging your modem, then plugging it back in

    i have been trzing setting up mz modem since weeks, now i have found this site, and yeah, it works...

    writting this, now from my own Knoppix is really cool...

    Good to hear cypher! I'm going to try and use the same method in suse now, will report back! (btw, got suse 9.1 professional free for filling in a form on the novell site!)

    Been trying to get my speedtouch modem installed on a variety of linux systems, suse 9.1 won't work due to usb_ohci or something. This is the closet I've got using knoppix but when I try this it says:-

    No further user interaction is required.
    Configuring SpeedTouch Driver...
    Software Configuration - SUCCESS
    Building SpeedTouch Driver...
    Software Build - SUCCESS
    Installing SpeedTouch Driver...
    /usr/bin/install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/sbin/modem_run': Read-only file system
    make[1]: *** [modem_run] Error 1
    make: *** [install-bin] Error 2
    Software Installation - FAILED
    Please check /tmp/speedtouch.make.install.txt for errors

    Read only file system? I am logged in as su though? Huh?

    I am using the live cd.
    no idea what to do with that script they suggsted tho!

    i was just wondering, will the modem still work under windows after installing it under linux ?

    Yes the modem still works under windows, don't forget to stop de modem in linux (amstop.sh, ou speedthouc-stop) before going to windows, because some times if you do not stop it, the modem will be unavaible for windows.


    My modem is an OCTAL with the same chip of the speedtouch.

    The alternative is to try the LiveCD Kanotix. This has a Speedtouch connection in the main menu (PPPoATM or PPPoE). It works very well.
