Where would one type iwpriv? As you can gather I am quite new to Knoppix. I will look at the link you provided meantime. Thanks for the heads up
You would type it at the terminal. There's an icon in the lower left corner that looks like a chalk board.
I'm thinking of buying a Centrino notebook and would be interested in seeing the results you get.

You're talking about a usb device? You were able to configure essid and wep with iwconfig?
I'm talking about a built-in pci card, a non-usb device.
My laptop is:
Dell Latitude D600
1.6 GHz Centrino CPU
1 GB RAM
Intel Pro 2100 Wireless card
40 GB HDD
ATI Radeon 9000 graphics (32 mb)
DVD/CDRW
I'll try Knoppix26 today and let you know if it works.

ipw2100
Hey there guys -
OK, I tried out 2.6 kernel again, and my only my built in gigabit ethernet device was recognized. That means the ipw2100 was not recognized and didn't work under 2.6. Is it that ipw2100 is only configured to work under 2.4?
Also, in 2.4, I'm having trouble getting the device to come up. here are some results. Please help (eth0 is my wireless card):
Code:
root@ttyp0[knoppix]# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:23:4C:AC:E3
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x1000 Memory:fafef000-fafeffff
Code:
root@ttyp0[knoppix]# ifup eth0
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
Code:
root@ttyp0[knoppix]# iwpriv
lo no private ioctls.
eth0 no private ioctls.
eth1 no private ioctls.
Does that help anything?

Hi,
I've gotten my Dell 600m laptop ( Centrino based ) to work with Knoppix 3.4 . One first thing to mention is that kernel 2.6 will not work. The module for Intel 2100 pro wireless isn't working and returns a funky error message when I tried to load it with 'modprobe'. So, use the default 2.4.26 kernel . The steps I am posting are from what I remember from yesterday night.
1. open a terminal and keep it open for step 2 and 5. ( optional ) and step 6. ( needed )
2. optionally, type 'iwconfig'. You now should see a eth0 device which points to the wlan card.( you may also do a 'lsmod' to see whether a module ipw2100 has been loaded )
3. now run the wlan configuration tool. You will start it from the desktop and not from the terminal. It comes with a GUI so it makes it a little less cryptic. You will find it under start - knoppix - internet ( not 100% sure about that order but you'll find it by clicking around )
4. You now got to know your WLAN setup parameters like ssid / channel and encryption key. That's because you got to enter them when prompted. Forget about entering extra info you don't know, you won't need it ( like module parameter ). When you are somewhat sure that everything is fine and the wlan config tool exit without any error, you most likely are ready to go except that you now need to start DHCP on eth0.
5. Optionally type again 'iwconfig'. Now, you should see an updated table for 'eth0' which should show you the correct SSID which you assigned when setting up the wireless router. BTW, I have not setup a SSID requirement for my wlan network but I have a encryption key. I can still see the SSID correctly retrieved.
6. As a final step, type 'netcardconfig'. Pick 'eth0' and if asked to start dhcp say yes. Exit the tool. To verify that you got finally a network running, type 'ifconfig' . You now hopefully see a device 'eth0' added ...
7.DONE.
Hope that helped. Forgive me if I missed or misspelled a configuration step. As I said I am typing this from my memory.
Dan.

Error when running makefile for hostap-driver-0.1.3
I would love to have to deal with the problems you're dealing with already, but unfortunately I'm still struggling at a step at the very beginning. I actually created a seperate topic, but maybe somebody here knows how to also fix this: Error when running makefile for hostap-driver-0.1.3.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

ipw2100
Ahhh!
The feeling of surfing the net wirlessly and in Knoppix. Isn't life bliss!?
I went to another access point that doesn't have WEP or MAC filtering enabled like my home wlan does. All I did was boot up, config the wlan with wavelan configuration in the menu, and then run Network Card Configuration from the menu. DHCP enabled.....OK!
Here I am typing the results!
---> Torbu
Are you using a different version of Knoppix (older), or a different distro that you need to install the ipw2100 files from Intel? I went through that with Knoppix 3.3 and Fedora Core test 1 & 2, and still couldn't get it to work. Fedora is a very nice distro, but I took it off because I just couldn't figure out how to config my ipw2100 on it. The only thing that DID work was to use the Linuxant driver, but I didn't really want to pay $20.00 so quickly, and thus waited to see if ipw2100 was included with 3.4. Lucky for me it is, and it now works!

I can't help you with your makefile problem and from the post you link to, it appears you already installed Knoppix 3.3. But I wanted to mention that Knoppix 3.4 has hostap already installed. It may be easier to just install Knoppix 3.4 in place of 3.3. Just a thought.

With a link quality of 0 out of 100 I wouldn't wonder why you are not connected ? Maybe get a little closer to the router ? ( I am not sure whether this is applicable in your case )
Also try to first shutdown your eth1 connection - ifconfig eth1 down.
Thanks for the tip Dan! I'll try the second one though, as I was sitting 3 feet away from my wrouter
I'll have to check to make sure the ESSID and the WEP password was correct, but like I mentioned above, I did get it working on a wrouter that has no protection on it at all. good thing, it's not my router!
