Thread: Wireless with Intel Centrino (2100) & Knoppix 3.4

Wireless with Intel Centrino (2100) & Knoppix 3.4

I have just DL'd the 3.4 version. It mentions that the Centrino chip is supported. I have tried getting it to work but to know avail.

The main reason I have loaded Knoppix is to use Airsnort and test the security of the wireless network here.

Can anyone offer any 123 steps to getting this to work?

    Thank you in advance.

Hmm. I'd be interested in hearing about this as well. Right now I don't have anything that's using Centrino, but I have thought about getting a new notebook. I've discovered a few wireless issues that I need to email klaus about, but nothing Centrino related as of yet.

Can you give the results from iwpriv. I'm not sure if the Centrino drivers support monitor mode - which you will need for airsnort.

I did get a message saying something about monitor mode but I am unsure what supporting monitoring mode means. I will have a trawl around to see if I can dig up some info. Any pointers from yourself is appreciated too

If you ran airsnort you probably got a message " cannot set monitor mode " or something to that effect. If you type the command "iwpriv" (without quotes) and if you don't see monitor listed, then I don't think you can use airsnort with that driver. At least not at the present state of development.

You may want to check their website:

Where would one type iwpriv? As you can gather I am quite new to Knoppix. I will look at the link you provided meantime. Thanks for the heads up

Sure, basically it has to do with wireless usb devices. With the release of 3.4 I tired to get my Linksys wusb12 device working. 3.4 detected it and loaded the prism2_usb driver which is great. The device was designated as wlan0. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to designate the essid or to use a wep key with usb wlan devices when using Knoppix from the cd. The reason is as follows: the configs for wireless pcmcia cards are stored in /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts. This is the file that is written to when users plug in their essid and wep keys using wlcardconfig. The problem is that the config file for wlan devices is /etc/wlan/wlan.conf, but on Knoppix this is just a symlink to /KNOPPIX/etc/wlan/wlan.conf which is of course is read only. The real wlan.conf needs to be placed in /etc/wlan/wlan.conf and made writeable just like /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts is. After that, Klaus could hopefully update wlcardconfig so that it could plug in the right values to wlan.conf. BTW, if i'm mistaken about any of this, please someone let me know. I haven't fooled around much with these wireless usb devices, but from what I understand this info is correct and these setting will need to be adjusted if people are to get their usb wireless devices working.

    Centrino...

    headshot,

What have you tried to get the chipset working? I booted first into 'knoppix26', and I didn't get it to work in there (I didn't try very hard), but when I just booted from plain 'knoppix', my card was recognized, and I ran the iwconfig in the Knoppix menu under Networking. Worked like a charm.

Please post your reply & problems.

You're talking about a usb device? You were able to configure essid and wep with iwconfig?
