Is this version old?
A computer shop just made up a single bootable CD for Knoppix STD Version o.1B for me. Browsing this board, I see that Knoppix 3.3 is out and wonder if my version is too old to be of much use.

Greetings cybergal,
That version number sounds strange. Perhaps some old timers
can recall if it is an actual KNOPPIX version or just something
your vender wrote on the disk.
To find the version of newer releases boot the CD,
click on the shell and type the following line:
strings /mnt/cdrom/KNOPPIX/boot.img | grep BETA
What do you see?
Since KNOPPIX can be downloaded for no charge and
placed an a $.25 CD -- hopefully your vender is not too
far behind on the versions.
But to answer you question? With any version you can
learn a huge amount of LINUX, programming, math, and
English majors can even use it write books and poems.
But if you want to hack, re-master, shrink, enlarge, install,
hunt bugs, use the latest hardware -- go for the newest
version that come out every one to two months.
Best Wishes

That would be the current version of STD according to the home page.

Thanks, guys, for your prompt replies! It seems that this version is heavily into security. For now, I just want to learn Linux without jeopardizing the Mandrake 7.1 distro on my hard drive. Also, as I plan to upgrade fairly shortly, Knoppix might tilt the balance to Debian rather than some of the other available distros.
