    CD's and updates

I will be giving it a try soon, we are going to make a CD with xephem and other astronomy programs for our site starryskies.com. Now I wish I had something faster than dialup, or someplace close I could get some speedy Internet access. Anyone have any suggestions for CD vendors?

One issue that concerns me a bit. Because knoppix is based on Debian unstable/testing, if a user installs it on their hard drive providing support would be a lot easier with stable Debian. However pointing the sources.list to the stable archives will undoubable cause some dependency issues. I know I could setup our own apt archives, but that would be too much work for what is going to be a pilot/test project. Does anyone have suggestions on how we might provide reasonable updates, especially security, and not turn this into a support nightmare?

Do you think they'll write a book?

With all the press Knoppix has gotten lately, do you think O'reilly will write a book about it? It would be the perfect Linux starter book...and could include a Knoppix CD ta 'boot [pardon the pun...but it was fun]

I'm actually surprised that we haven't started seeing book writers settle into something like Knoppix yet. Perhaps a few statements of things that will Always/soon/never be in-or out- of the standard distro would help. but it would make a great tool to add to many, many programming and application books!

There already is a book with a Knoppix CD, a thread on the forum with the post about it.

In another thread, I was hoping an expert could remaster the Knoppix CD into 420Mb (preferably omitting the server files) to fit onto the box-loads of perfectly satisfactory old hard drives still kicking about. Way beyond my capabilities, even with books and websites.

You can try Gnoppix. It is based on Knoppix but uses Debian Woody, the latest stable release of debian. http://www.gnoppix.org/

    hi there,

just on the matter of linux distibutors.

i emailed my local linux distributor and asked them to download it for me and send it on a disk. they were happy to do it. sure it takes a week to get it but its a lot less painfull than using a 56k modem eh?
