    Question Virus Scan Using Knoppix

    Hi there

I downloaded Knoppix recently as my Windows XP system crashed suddenly (just before it displayed a "virus detected" window from Avast Anti-virus).

I've booted Knoppix from the live CD and have attempted to use the inbuilt Virus Scanner to scan my drivers for viruses however it doesn't seem to do much.

I've also tried to download f-prot, however when I double click on the file, it doesn't execute.

Is anyone able to help with the install of f-prot? Am I supposed to have installed Knoppix on my har drive instead of using it from the live cd?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

I think that I can describe the installation of f-prot on Knoppix 6.4.4, but I don't recommend the use of any Linux system if your HDD has an NTFS filesystem.

I suppose that you have downloaded the file fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz and saved it to the home directory /home/knoppix. If that is the case I would open a terminal and issue the following commands
    Code:
    cd /home/knoppix
    sudo tar xzvf fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz -C /opt
    cd /opt/f-prot
    sudo ./install-f-prot.pl
The install program asks some questions which could be answered by hitting the enter key. You must have a working internet connection because the virus definitions are quite old and really need an update.

After installation, the virus scan program fpscan can be run in the command line (terminal). I think that you have to be root in order to do a full scan of your system.

Don't hesitate to consult the documentation of fpscan if you are unsure how to use the program. The manpage can be read in the terminal by issuing
    Code:
    man fpscan

    Thanks for your reply Klaus.

After typing in the below line in the terminal:

    sudo tar xzvf fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz -C /opt

I receive the below error message:

sudo tar xzuf fp-linux-i686-ws.tar.gz -c /opt tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or '--test-label' option
Try 'tar --help' or 'tar--usage' for more information.

Am I doing something wrong here? I'm not sure whether I have a FAT or NTFS file system. Is there any way I can check through Knoppix?

    Many thanks

    You have to issue
    Code:
    sudo tar xzvf fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz -C /opt
in the directory where the file fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz resides, but you made two typing errors.

If you want to know which file systems are used you can use the blkid command.
    Code:
    sudo blkid
