Choose the right download-file

Hi,

I'm using Linux Kubuntu (Dapper Drake alias 6.06) on my old laptop. It's an old Pentium II 300 MGz with just 64 mb ram... I know, it isn't much.

Because Kubuntu founds my PCMCIA-card but couldn't connect to my wireless network (for some very weird reason) they told me for trying Knoppix.

So I have 2 questions:

1) Can I use the 'live'-function of the Knoppix-cd? And has this 'live'-cd an 'install to hard disk'-function?
2) What is the right file I most download?

For question 2: I already found this:
ftp://ftp.knoppix.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/knoppix/

I'm not that good in ftp-servers... And so, I don't know wich file I actually need to use Knoppix as a Live and installation-cd.
I guess it would be this file:
File: KNOPPIX_V5.0.1CD-2006-06-01-EN.iso
But I'm not very sure... The file is big (712926 KB) so just in case it is the right file: let's quickly ask someone who knows it better then I do.

See answer #1 and read the faq. It answers your questions about which file and also suggests that you use BitTorrent instead of FTP, which is good advice and worth the five minutes it might take to learn to use BitTorrent. There is a lot more in the faq that you will need to know also. As to Live CD vs Install, yes you can use the Live CD. You'll find the Live CD much richer than the Kubunto live CD. But don't install it, see answer #2 if you start thinking that you want to.

Kubuntu with just 64 megs?

I always thought KDE needs at least 128 megs to work at a decent speed.

Ubuntu 5.10 was really slow, even slower then Windows XP. But the new version, 6.06 (Kubuntu) works really great with it! It's been a very long time ago that I was really happy with that laptop.

I said "happy" because I don't know how to say it in other words, I live in Belgium, so my language is Dutch and not English.

Thanks Harry for your post! If Knoppix works, a will think of an installation, instead of Kubuntu. I have Kubuntu on my desktop-pc. For the laptop: it just needs to work for:

Internet
A little bit typing (documents and that kind of stuff)

Nothing more. The hard disk is only 4 gb big... Or should I say "little" :P

I read the wiki... this file File: KNOPPIX_V5.0.1CD-2006-06-01-EN.iso should be right I guess.
I prefer to download it via the "normal" way and not with the use of that program.

If it works better than Kubuntu you would be far better off installimg Debian than Knoppix, but you don't seem to be receptive to that concept.

"That program" is the normal way, the mirrors are now only a second option for those behind corporate firewalls tat prevent the normal way. Be sure to real all of the faq and do the md5 test if you insist on your way (yup, another thing to learn, how frightening).

I know how to use BitTorrent. But I didn't like it, it's much easyer for just click at the link and download. If you are working with wireless... Then is BitTorrent a very good way to download files, but I have here a pc with an networkcable.

Your choice. I actually have to click twice, once to download the torrent file and a second time to click on the torrent to start BT and do the actual download. I find it worth it to get the download in 1/4 of the time or less, and to get a reliable download rather than sometimes have to download several times from the mirrors before I get a good file, but that's just me.

What can I say... I've been very luckly with my downloads. None of my Linux-distro downloads where unsuccesfull... True, it is sometimes a bit difficult to see wich is the good file to download.
The Kubuntu-distro has made this much easyer for you:

It is all catagorized, very easy to make your choice

But I know to file now, and I will download it tomorrow.

Maybe with BitTorrent.

Okay, I downloaded it with BitTorrent.

I know how to use it. But it was a long time ago that I used the program. I forgot how 'handy' it sometimes could be.

So ok, I didn't downloaded it with use of the mirrors.
