What seems to work is gunzip minirt.gz, then
cpio -ivu --no-absolute-filenames < minirt (not minirt.gz)
Then go look at init to see what the magic is.

Yes you are correct. I was going a little too fast... Something like this works better:
gunzip -c minirt.gz | cpio -ivu --no-absolute-filenames
