    PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available

    a basic problem.

when i boot from the knoppix cd, i see:

    [penguin]
PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available because of resource collisions

Welcome to the KNOPPIX live Linux-on-CD!

    Probing SCSI ... aic7xxx.o

    then ... nothing.

    i'm booting from Knoppix 3.1 RELEASE: 2002-12-10-BETA.

i'm using a dell notebook (inspiron 2650) running windows xp pro (i'm ashamed to say!)

anything i can do? i'd love to be able to demo linux this way to clients!

    thanks

It looks like Knoppix may have assigned the same IRQ to two different items. Obviously something to do with the PCI bus. Anyway.........

    Firts try booting like this:
    boot:failsafe

If that doesn't work, enter your BIOS
    Disable APM (advanced power management)
Disable PnP (plug & play) then try the 'failsafe' boot again.

If that doesn't work try booting with the cheat codes found here:
    http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/CheatCodes

If you need help with the cheat codes post back.

Failsafe does almost no hardware detection. Since you can boot with failsafe it is only a matter of discovering which device or feature Knoppix does not like. You will need to implement one or more of these cheat codes:
    http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/CheatCodes

I would start with this: (only type what is in bold)

    boot:knoppix noapic noapm nopcmcia nousb

If it boots then you know that one of these four things is causing Knoppix not to boot.

apic - advanced programmable interrupt control
    apm - advanced power management
pcmcia - your modem or network card
    usb - self explainatory

Assuming it boots with these cheat codes, the next step would be to eliminate each of these as a possibility like so:

    boot:knoppix noapic-if that doesn't work then:
    boot:knoppix noapm...and so on...
    boot:knoppix nopcmcia
    boot:knoppix nousb

If you need assistance with the other cheat codes (language, wheelmouse, screen resolution etc. just post back.

    PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available

'knoppix noscsi' is enough, it turns out, to boot up the knoppix system (apparently without errors).

    the message:

PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available because of resource collisions

still appears tucked in under tux. maybe at some point i'll discover that i really NEED Device 00:1f.1 - then again, maybe not.

    thanks again.

So you got it eh? Cool. I wonder what that error means exactly?

Anyway........glad you got it. Knoppix is even better installed top your hard drive!

Ah yes- that would explain it. You've got an onboard winmodem. Here's a short article explaining the whole problem and a few solutions.

I get the same pci error when i boot from CD... seeing as I have no modem, I doubt that is the issue (removed the damn thing for pci space for other toys) I also get an error related to my TV card farther down the list....how ever, the tv card works.... I will post that as soon as I return to my comp..
