usb flash memory and printer configuration

I just install knoppix version 3.3 and i am struggling to get my usb 2.0 128mb flash memory to work. when i attach it the operating system cannot detect it. My other problem is the printer which i connect it via the USB port i am struggling to configure it to print.

how do you know it is not detected? what does

 dmesg|grep sd

say?
for me it is
