I downloaded the latest Knoppix LIVE CD

but am having problem starting f-prot.virus scan

I downloaded it, now called "fpscan" and click "execute" but do not get any windows to see scan started?

tried commands under terminal f-prot /mnt/hdb1

    still nothing

goal is to scan a windows drive, using f-prot.with latest Knoppix LIVE CD

Here's how got it to work under 6.01 MicroKnoppix CD

    Downloaded http://files.f-prot.com/files/unix-t...i686-ws.tar.gz

    Extract with Xarchiver to Desktop
    Open a root shell
    CD to/home/knoppix/Desktop/f-prot
    Code:
    ./install-f-prot.pl
That will install updates as well
    Mount windows drive
    Code:
    fpscan /mountpoint/drive
    Good Luck

What command is that the output from? If it's from fpscan , then we need to know the mountpoint of the drive you are trying to scan. Open PCMan , click on the drive you want to scan, and look up in the address bar, You should see something like /media/hdxx. Thats the target of your scan. I f the download and install / update went ok you should be able to issue the fpscan /media/hdxx (replacing xx with what you see in the PCMan address bar).

Remember you must install f-prot as root, to open a root shell look in Accessories in the main menu tree.

As for the Latittude, probably need to try some cheat codes. Hit f3 as soon as the cd starts to boot.

Again, the more details you can provide in your posts, the easier it is to help.

    Another Virus Scanner

A somewhat easier to use virus scanner, ClamScan is available from the apt repositories:

    Code:
aptitude update && aptitude install freshclam
in a root shell will download the clamav engine and virus definitions, then:
    Code:
    man clamscan
to Read The Fine Manual page
    Code:
    clamscan -r /media/hdxx
will scan the drive. Remember to mount the drive first.

I've only started playing with clamscan on Window$ drives, so YMMV.

    Hey rusty,

thx for your great effort in this! Its really been a great help. I caught myself a f*ckin windows virus yesterday named "recycler" or something (it infectes all drives incl usb, disables all windows based virus software (i had kaspersky running) and and remote controlls the pc). Anyway i was forced to reset up my entire system via knoppix.

I just scanned my external hd successfulyl with f-prot (using ur "howto" advices). Just to get a second opinion, i wanted to use calmscan as well. unfortunately the installation didnt work.

I successfully executed the ""aptitude update && aptitude install freshclam" cmd in my root terminal. But in the end of this process it says something like "couldn't find a paket with the name or description »freshcalm« (i copied my german log below)

    Code:

    root@Microknoppix:~# man calmscan
    No manual entry for calmscan
    root@Microknoppix:~# calmscan -r /media/sda1
    bash: calmscan: command not found
Seems like calmscan couldnt be installed propperly... Got any hints for me?

    Thx in advance!

    Kind regards,
    Daniel
