    Installing Knoppix 3.3

I am running Knoppix 3.3 that came with the June 2004 issue of Linux format. How do I install knoppix 3.3 on my computer?

Open up a terminal window ("konsole") from within KDE (or your favorite window manager) and type sudo knoppix-installer. A GUI-based installer will come up which should be fairly self-explanatory, but use this board's "search" function to look for posts containing the word "knofig" in order to find out about advanced installation options.

There's a lengthy description of how to install Kanotix (a Knoppix variant) here which should give you a pretty good idea of what the Knoppix installation procedure is like.

    P.S:
The June issue of Linux Format magazine has 7 live Linux distros (Knoppix, Damn Small Linux, Gnoppix, RPM Linux, Slax, Mandrake Move, and PC Linux OS 2K4) on the cover DVD. It's available in the US at most Barnes & Noble bookstores. (Love those British computer magazines with the cover CDs/DVDs!)

They also have a very good Linux forum at their website (hi, fingers99!).

It's too bad Linux Format didn't include Knoppix v3.4 rather than v3.3 -- but they probably went to press before it came out.

A couple minor quibbles with their article:
    - Yes, Gnoppix is based on Knoppix.
    - I don't really know if Knoppix is "the first project to make a complete Linux desktop run entirely off a CD-ROM" or if DemoLinux got there first, but DemoLinux v1 came out in 2000, and (it seems to me) had wider publicity at the time. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated since v3.
    - Funny they bothered to give "performance" ratings without mentioning the speed of the CD-ROM drives their test computers have.

Thanks! Can I do this while I'm using the demo?

It's not a demo -- you've got the real deal. (Knoppix was really meant as a run-off-CD affair, not as a install-to-hard-disk distro; the installer is sort of bolted on, although it works very well.)
