    What is the root password for the Knoppix CD?

    There is _no_ root passwd. Open virtual terminal 1..4 with Alt+Ctrl+F1 etc. There you _are_ root.
    Return to KDE with Alt+Ctrl+F5

    Also if you open a shell and type "sudo su" you will have root priviledges.

    launch the root command prompt and change the password

    You can simply launch the root xterm and then type passwd to change the root password.

    After that you can su to root as necessary.
