    Wireless Knoppix?

    Hey Everyone,

Ok my last post didnt seem to go so well, so i managed to grab a friend of mine whos obsessed with linux and he got it working...and im now beggining to see the light! Except one thing...i cant seem to connect to our wireless network, is there anyway to see if knoppix has picked up my card and installed the needed drivers? I currently have a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520 PCI card in my computer, but i have no idea how to check that Knoppix has picked this up and installed the driver for it or not.

Ive had a good ol`hunt on the forums and on the net for about a week now with no luck so i thought id try again here to see if anyone could shed some light on this strange issue. If for arguments sake i find out that it doesnt have a driver for it how do i go about obtaining one for it? Please remmeber i have no idea how to compile kernals and the such, so please some step by step guides would be much apreciated!

    Thanks for your time

I go to Dlink.com. I go to support & then FAQs at Dlink.com, I click on General Wireless. The first entry is "Which D-Link wireless adapters have Linux drivers available?". I click on Read to get the answer
Q: Which D-Link wireless adapters have Linux drivers available?

A: The following drivers are open source and in no way supported or endorsed by D-Link. Use at your own risk.
The page shows that the DWL-G520 (rev A & B) use the MADWIFI drivers

That is about all the help I can give since the only thing wireless in my house is a cordless telephone.
    I wish you success.
    James

    **EDIT**
I noticed that this thread is listed in the Windows & New to Linux forum. It might seem appropriate to have it there, the true meat of your support request is about wireless networking & thus I feel this belongs in Networking forum which would help to get other people looking in on it.

    Hey UnderScore,

Thanks for the reply! MAybe i did post this in the wrong forum now you mention it, but it does fall into 2 catogories lol.

Well i actualy have some luck! I used the KWifi Manager tool and after loads of tweaking it managed to pickup my access point, its got the encryption key and is working fine except it says "Local IP: Unavalible" Any ideas how i can get it to obtain an IP from the DHCP ?

    Thanks in advanced,

There is certainly some overlap for amy categories. But try to use some judgement and find the best fit. All knoppix issues run on hardware and are seen during or after booting, for example, but that doesn't mean that all would be appropriate in the Hardware & Booting forum. James is right, this post will help others more if it's in the Networking forum, I'll move it.

I think you find after you get the network set up, SSID and WEP key and such that you'll need to run netcardconfig, either from a command line or from the menu system. Knoppix can't have done the DHCP at boot because it didn't have the wireless information yet, netcardconfig will get it again.

    Hey Harry Kuhman,

thanks for moving the post, and once again sorry i got it mixed up! I tried the command you tried except it runs it for eth0 and not ath0, any ideas why? Yes there is a standard network card in my machine but its not used (Onboard LAN). As i only use Wireless due the location of my PC. Is there anyway at all to get the command to run for the wireless instead of Eth?

Thanks for all the help so far, really apreciate it!

    Cheers

Not sure I've ever seen an ath0. Thought when I finally got my wireless card working it showed up as eth1. I don't have Knoppix running and can't check at the moment, but have you tried reading the manual? man netcardconfig at a shell prompt, to be specific? I expect there is a parameter to pass to select the interface.
