Installing Knoppix 3.1 on a second hard drive

I have a dual boot system with win 98 running on my first drive and Fedora Core I running on a second hard drive.
Suppose I wanted to replace Fedora Core I by Knoppix 3.1 on that second drive, and leave my windows drive alone?
How can I do this in a simple way?

    Thanks,
    Penny

    Penny,
While there are some people who think that installing Knoppix is a good idea, it was intended as a live CD and there are a lot of problems that can come up when you do it. See this forum post for more discussion.

Also, 3.1 is very old. There will be added issues if you try to install anything else with that version, and you will have trouble finding others that are running it.

I suggest that you consider installing Debian to that second drive rather than Knoppix. Debian is the intended for hard disk Linux distribution (distro) that Knoppix is built on. Three years ago, when your version 3.1 Knoppix was first made, the Debian installer was quite technical and complex to get a good Debian install. Since then things have improved a lot. It's not perfect yet, neither is Knoppix. But you should at least try installing Debian before you try to "install" Knoppix. That way you will be making an informed decision. Once you have Debian installed you can pretty much install the newerst versions of any of the Knoppix software that you want to use or any other software in the vast package list, directly over the internet. Knoppix has a greate selection for a CD, but it is limited by the size of the CD. And You will find that if you install "Knoppix" and then you try to install any of these packages like you could with Debian, you may break Knoppix, as it mixed parts for different distributions, That may be OK to do in a CD environment where everything can be checked to see it works together and it is known that it will never be updated, but it should not be done on a hard disk install.

If you want to dismiss this advice, there there is a forum for people who install Knoppix to hard disk. Your question would be better asked there. You might also want to scan over some of the questions that others are asking, many being of the form "This worked from the CD, why did it break after a HD install?". At least that way you will be going into this knowing what to expect.
