Can't connect to internet with PCI Hardware Modem

I have a USR 5610B internal PCI modem. I have tried 'Query Modem' on ALL the ports
available via the KPPP 'Configure' option without any luck.
How can I configure this modem to connect to the internet?

The USR robotics manual says that this modem works with Linux...

I have Knoppix LiveCD V 4.0.2, and all works well.... except connecting to the Internet

    Help would be appreciated.

    First look here:

    http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/PCImodems.html

Here is post from another forum, with some help:

"The 5610B works with Mepis 2004.06 and SM 3.3. I did nothing special. But you have to make sure you have it on the correct COM Port for your machine. Sometimes u have to confirm the com port via windoz - I hate to say that. You may have to link the port to /dev/modem.

Alternatively, try ls -l /dev/modem to find out the com port. You can also do things like ls -l /dev/ttyS2, etc. All from Command line. The latter gives the c 4 68 part of it. Also see man pages on ls. Watch the spaces in the code.

Two other handy pieces of code, from cmnd line as su:

    mknod /devttyS2 c 4 68 Here S2 is COM3, etc.
    (this sets S2)

    ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem Links e.g. S2 to /dev/modem"

Many thanks.... I'll give it a try.

I am kinda disappointed though... The USR Robotics User Guide sez:
"This modem is 'Plug and Play' for Linux Kernel 2.3 and later"
I have Knoppix Live CD V.4.0.2 with Kernel 2.6...

    Again, many thanks....

Don't be! You would see what real disappointment is if you had to install driver

What's more disappointing is when you have to go buy a new one because it's a winmodem with an unsupported chipset.

Windows XP indicated that my modem used COM3. I then tried the above two commands

    mknod /devttyS2 c 4 68
    ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem

which executed OK in su mode...

Then, I started KPPP and got a "Modem busy message".... which I suppose is better than the "Modem not found"
message I was getting before I enetered the 'mknod' and 'ln' commands.

I tried to Configure KPPP with '/dev/modem' , and /dev/ttyS0,
    /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, /dev/ttyS3 .... all resulted in 'modem busy"...

    Thanks for your help...

Did you do things from http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/PCImodems.html ? I am not sure, but there is something about IRQ:

    # setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A port 0xbc00 irq 12 baud_base 115200 spd_vhi skip_test

    it seems important to me...

    Good evening everybody,

Few days ago, even though I am a beginner in Linux, I booted a Knopppix 3.9 live-CD in my Pentium 4, and it seems it works all well, except for the internet.
I have a /Smart Link 56K Voice Modem /and I use dial-up Internet. I followed the KPPP protocol to configure the modem, but when I tried to connect to the Internet, I got
the message "modem is busy". I thought it is about the drivers I had not
install. So, I went to /Smart Link/ Web site and I downloaded the Linux
modem drivers. I transfered them into a USB drive and I copied the
/.tar.gz/ file into the Knoppix desktop. Unfortunately, I have no clue
how to install them and make my modem work. Do you know any step-by-step
    procedure to install them?
