    Cannot Install package from Synaptic...

    Hi Forum,

    I am planning to build a LiveDVD with applications intended for Mechanical Engineering;

Some of them are in the Repos, some have been built from source on other systems ( I use Slackware on my work as Engineer ) so I can easily rebuild them in Knoppix, as soon as I have the needed libs ( binaries and headers ) to link them, and some are only released as Binaries... either for the x86 or the x86_64 arch.

My apps will be Cad applications,
    FEA and FVM software,
    Math prototyping applications,

stuff like BRL-CAD, Code Aster, Salome, Calculix, Ofelie, DealII, OpenFOAM, Octave/QtOctave, FreeMat, K3d, Blender, Syrthes, Code Saturne, Netgen, Gmsh, Mayavi2, ParaView, Visit, gerris flow solver, GFSView, OpenCascade,...

    My questions are :

Since I am supposed to build lots of things from source, I will need the support of some libraries and applications to do this... Since Knoppix, Unlike Slackware or Arch has automatic package management, I use Synaptic to install these prerequirements... yet some of them cannot be installd, despite the fact that they show up in Synaptic after updating the exixting repos...

This is strange... I am using Knoppix 6.2 LiveDVD ...

Must I enable some additional repos to have the environment to build the stuff I want, so as to have it installed in a chroot, prior to create a bootable iso image...?

Why do the demos in Scilab fail to run in a Live session...?

Is there any planned release of a Knoppix 6.2 x86_64....?

... I guess this is all.... for now...

I'm no expert on this, but I'll take a swing at it, as no one else has. It would definitely require a hard-disk installation, as I understand the re-mastering methodology. This introduces some definite quirks in Knoppix functionality, as it is intended to be used off the DVD/flash. One option would be to do your initial testing with a flash version, which merges the filesystem from the KNOPPIX directory with your persistent store, and still acts much the same as a DVD version. Once you have it as you want it, then you could use that experience (and some notes you carefully kept on that path!) to guide you in creating it as a hd-installed variant, which can then be made into a DVD.

Possibly a problem related to the path used to store things; chroot could change what that needs to be, or it may be just HD install versus DVD issue.

I think I have the same appetite for using Synaptic or even apt with the LiveCD.
I just never quite noticed that mine doesn't work with the LiveCD, even though its
right there on the menu. Mine fails somewhere along the way of resolving
    sources and/or having 'sufficient memory'.

I suspect it is not expected to work in Live mode, but I didn't know that.
If so, a synaptic warning screen might be in order to educate those naifs
such as I. Especially so, considering Knoppix is usually thought of as a
LiveCD and not necessarily or even usually as a means of achieving an
    installed system.

I run into the same thing on occasion, both with aptitude and synaptic - I'm fairly sure my encrypted merge-file is getting filled up (this is with the "poor man's install" variant.) I need to make a new (larger) one and copy the old one's contents over, I guess. Someday...

    Cheers!
