    Burning DVD with Knoppix

    Hi,

I'm new to Knoppix, but familiar with computers. I dl and installed
v.6.7 on a flash drive in order to recover files from my inaccessible
hard drive (can't get pass welcome page). Had no trouble at all with
the Knoppix install, boot up and having all my hard drives to
    automatically mount.

Prior to installing WinXP, my internal WD drive was partitioned into a
    NFTS-formated C drive and FAT32-formated D drive . I also have an
external WD Elements Drive (FAT32) which is almost full and which I
can access through Knoppix. The D drive has about 30 gb of unused
storage, but not enough to hold everything on my C drive which I want
    to reformat and reinstall WinXP.

My intention is to move enough from the D drive (I'd hope to burn 4-5
DVD's) so that I can backup my C drive to it.

When I put a Sony DVD+R into my Plextor PX-708A burner, the disc is
recognized, but I cannot get it to mount. I get the following error
    message:

"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified"

This message is confusing as I had no trouble burning these DVD's when
I could use WinXP and I really don't understand what is meant by
"write-protected". Does this refer to the burner or bland DVD?

I've read several post about burning DVD's on this forum, but all of
them had to do with burning Knoppix (I assume using WinXP), and not
Linux. Also something about not being able to burn anything from a
NFTS-formated hard drive, which I also don't understand.

So, is there somebody out there that could tell me what I need to do
next. Is there some program not included in my version of Knoppix
    that I need to download.

    Thanks

    John

Yes the message is confusing but it's perfectly alright. The messages is just the result of an attempt to mount the unformatted/unused DVD and it noticed that the media is read only (DVD+R) but unused yet and so the mount failure. You can safely ignore that message and go ahead to use the disc by using k3b - which can be accessed from lxde menu, under "Sound and Video". 'k3b' is the software which allows you to backup data to the DVD.

    Thanks for the reply Kl522

My copy of Knoppix (v6.7) doesn't have k3b, but does have Brasero which I used initially and which gave me the initial message I previously posted. After fussing around with it some more I noticed that the place I selected for the temp file wasn't large enough for the temp file and so selected my D drive (sda5) which had about 40 gb.

The burn seemed to go fine until the very end where the burner automatically ejected the disk and I got a message that I had to "manually" eject and remove it in order to continue. Made no sense to me, but I removed the "burned" DVD and closed the dialogue box.

When I tried to read the burn on a separate DVD Rom drive (as well as my Plextor burner), Knoppix fails to recognize and mount it.

I go to my D drive (sda5) and notice that I now have about 8 gb less space on this drive (32 gb) which was about the space my burn initially told me I would need for the tmp image. So I assume something is stored there. I did notice several Brasero temp files on D and opened one labelled Brasero_tmp_FQFA1V which appears to give me the results of the burn. Unfortunately I closed Brasero in order to try another burn and going back into D I noticed that all these tmp files had disappeared, but I still only had 32 gb of storage.

Luckily I still had Brasero_tmp_FQFA1V open and so saved it as a txt file with leafpad. It is a rather long file and I am posting last part of the listing. I can send the first part if you think it helpful.

Sorry to make this so long, but thought maybe you could see something useful.

If you think I should try k3b, can you tell me how I incorporate this into Knoppix and use it as I' m working from a thumb drive.

Also, I tried to view the hidden files on my D drive, but cannot see anything that is 8 gb with todays date. Any idea how I can restore my D drive to 40 gb?

    Thanks,

    John

You know you can install programs by starting Synaptic from the menu?
