Close....
I'm really not sure what that file is for, but I know that I manually changed my video settings by modifying /etc/X11/X86Config file and it worked. I took a look at the X86Config-4 file, it looks like a good bet too, but all I know is that my changes took effect from only the X86Config file changes.
Just out of curiosity, why aren't you using the Control Centre X11 Display options? If you're trying to run them and everytime the app simply fails, remember that you have to be running kcontrol (the Control Centre) as root. There simply isn't a passwd prompt from the Display options (unfortunately).
Good Luck,
Civ

X86Config-4
Afaik
the X86Config file is for the 3.x.x Xfree86 server
the X86Config-4 file is for the 4.3.x Xfree86 server
so If you have a recent copy of Knoopix (or any other distro)
X86Config-4 is the file you want to edit
But beware, If you change something that you should, this means your with your command prompt and NO GUI to rechange your X86Config-4 file!
Good Luck!

Yes. I would recommend making a backup first.

And it may also be a good idea to change /etc/inittab to default run level 3 instead of 5, so you will boot to text mode by default. Then create a ~/.xinitrc file for your users to be able to start their desktop environment or WM with teh command startx. Safer this way when you go about driver installs or editing XF86Config's...
