Thread: Knoppix 3.3 will not mount HD on a Toshiba Laptop

    Knoppix 3.3 will not mount HD on a Toshiba Laptop

    I have a Toshiba Portege 4010.
    On v3.2 it boots and everything works fine, the HD will mount from the desktop icon.
    On v3.3 it boots and will hang at "creating /etc/fstab", even on the failsafe option.
    I can get past this if I specify the DMA cheatcode, it will boot to the desktop but not create a desktop icon for /dev/hda1.

    Any help would be great. Information follows:

    fdisk -l reports
    /dev/hda1 -----> HPFS/NTFS

    mount -t ntfs (or vfat) /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 returns
    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1,
    or too many mounted file systems
    (could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
    ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)

    I tried modprobe ntfs then mount, but this had no effect.

    I also disabled the Configured by OS option in the BIOS.

    I have tried many combinations of boot options and nothing helps.
    This is a list of ones I have tried:
    noscsi noapic idebus=66 ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66 nosmp pci=bios irq=bios failsafe

    I was able to get to the desktop and it would show the HD icon when I used this boot config:
    nousb nopcmcia nofirewire noscsi nosmp noapic idebus=66 ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66

    When it tried to mount from the icon it gave an Input/Output error.

    I have the same with a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000.
    If you try 'cat /proc/partitions' inside a shell you'll see, that the kernel doesn't recognise the partitions on the hd.
    This behaviour on Toshiba laptops started with the Knoppix V3.2 DVD edition (2003-07-10) and later. Beginning with this Knoppix release the kernel 2.4.21 was used. I found out that on Toshiba laptops all Knoppix versions with Linux kernel up to 2.4.20 work great but none with a higher kernel.
    I guess this problem is not related to Knoppix but to the kernel.
    Sorry, but I haven't found a solution until now. Even a BIOS update didn't change anything. So on my Toshiba laptop I still use Knoppix 3.2 2003-06-06 (the last working version).
    If you find a solution, please let me know.

    Forgive me...I'm new to Knoppix (though very experienced with RedHat). I've looked around the mirrors...where can I download this 06-06-2003 version of Knoppix so I can use it on my Toshiba laptop?

    I have a Toshiba Satellite with a HD install of Knoppix 3.3 and everything works great. Better, in fact, than any other distro I have tried to install on it. It even works with the internal wireless card (orinoco) that windows refuses to work with.

    Yep, some Toshibas seem to work with the Knoppix V3.3. A college of me has a Toshiba Sattelite pro 6100 and can boot Knoppix V3.3 witout any IDE/harddisk problems. So the Toshis may vary.

    I have tried just about everything and i would like to download knoppix 3.2 from 03.06.06 since that seems to be the latest one working on toshiba laptops. Could anyone give me a hint on where to find it?

    This site still has it laying around I was getting 150k/s when I just tried to download it here which is the max of my connection so it should be a speedy enough to download as well.

    The last line may be a clue - if the ide-scsi driver is late registering drive hdc, the request for partition information from hda may not be being processed in time - note the ide-scsi driver has identified the hda drive size parameters (5 lines up), so communication is operational, but it seems to be busy with hdc, the CDROM-DVD. Is it possible there is a race condition, with the combination of the hard drive and the CDROM/DVD?

    Anybody able to compare the HD and CDROM combinations in Toshibas that work, with those that don't?
