Come on, you're being too harsh. Mepis is a Knoppix derivative. It's debian based and uses Klaus' cloop.
Granted, it may not acknowledge this very prominently, but it certainly is no mere renaming of the original.
It has less mirrors than knoppix but can be downloaded for free (ibiblio, tuwien). Registration is suggested,
and I fail to see how that is worse than the "donate" link on many projects' site.
It might be a better choice for people who don't have a high-speed link, with its second CD full of installable packages.
