Split the KNOPPIX into 3 part so everybody could modify it~!

    Hey I've got this Idea,

why couldn't we ask Mr. Knoppor to split the "/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX" image file in the CD-ROM into 3 different image file as list follow:

Image file1. : contains the boot kernel + X and sound servers, and will selectively load the required files into a ramdisk after hardware detection.

Image file2. : contains the good old commmand utilities and man pages that will never be needed to be modify again.

Image file3. : contains applications, which could be different for anybody (KDE, GNOME, Mozilla, OpenOffice and many many more.. Java.. developer tools)

and while booting, it (this new knoppix) will selective load the required X and sound servers from image file 1, and the 2nd image file into a ramdisk 1st, then prompt the user to load the image file 3 from the same CD or allow the use to insert a CD disc 2, which only contains another file 3, with a totally different set of applications.

by doing this, we could spare the job of recompiling a kernel, re-packing un-modifily files and different applications into 3 jobs..

so on the one hand, the main Knoppix could reduce their frequency of release, e.g. once half year.

while on the other hand, everyone could re-compile their own favor application CDs (containing only the compressed image file 3 on a non bootable disc2) + 100MB larger (since we didn't need spaces for the kernel and X and sound drivers anymore)

which would allow engineers, educators, programmers, businessman, home user all have their different package by using the same boot disc 1, and build their own disc 2 with out worrying about the CD won't boot, X doesn't start, there is no Sound, couldn't read file on XX file system etc..

I guess this could be great, what do you guys think ?

but he might have to modify the cloop module.

    best regards,

    Charles Fan

    Ummm...

Why not just try to make your own with the mastering, or by doing it with morphix... it seems like it would suit your needs of only the programs you want, and alievate the need to have large amounts of ram in order to load the ISO to so that a new cd must be loaded.
You would also have more issues with noobies who can't figure out what is going on. When i give a CD to my friend, who has no clue, he is barely able to realise that he can do stuff by hitting F2.

Sorry if I sounded like an Arse, I truly didn't mean to, and I am too tired to be able to tell.

well you were just worrying about interface design,
(actually it's a good one, we could choose switching to image 3 on disc 2 by pressing "F5" etc?)

actually my intenetsion was about helping those who want to build a remaster but are not "OS-Remastering genious", or those who doesn't have the time to build or learn to build a remaster to be also able to use knoppix, (they might build better applications, for specific needs, but most of they time will be wasted on rebuilding the whole system package)

It would also reduce some work of Mr. knoppor on the future in handling less frequency updates.

Well I simply mean there is just many re-master of knoppix out there, but most of them might need to spend many time to debug to became as easy to use or as userfriendly as knoppix, why not just keep most of the goods of knoppix on one layer, and let others build another layer on top of it ?

But if all those could simply replaced with a application disc 2, they could have more time focuse on the content of the CD, but do not have to spending time debugging it, re-designing most it anymore.

BTW, I guess my idea will require PCs with 128MB to 256MB of ram..
the size of X and sound server + compressed commandline tools for a system is just about 64MB I guess

morphix is great, but too bad disc 2 isn't a cloop mountable, you need to "install disc1 1st" before you are able to use disc2.
