Using WINE

I've had a bit of success using WINE to start up WIMPdoze apps from a WIMPdoze partition. Is that the only way WINE can run WIMPdoze apps, ie: they've been installed from WIMPdoze already?

I guess my question is: is there anyway to use WINE to install a WIMPdoze app to a Linux partition so we don't need WIMPdoze at all? Barring that, is there some other way to install a WIMPdoze app without WIMPdoze and run it in Linux?

You can also install apps with WINE in linux(make sure all drives are configured properly). All config files should be in '~/.wine/', and '~/.wine/fake_windows/' is your fake windows installation(known as C:\ to win apps) where stuff can be installed to.

All though WINE can run some apps for windows in linux, theres still thousands that wont run. If you are dependent on some windows apps, it's generally not a good idea to dump windows.

No, I'm not dependent on WIMPdoze apps. I just found an app I wanted to try for which there is no Linux equivalent.

I've only used Wine for two things, one worked (kind of), and the other failed misserably.

My old computer was a M$ install, and was "trying out" Knoppix by use of the Live CD, at the time...

For a kick, I fired off Solitaire (sol) into Wine, it worked. (but, this is the "kind of worked" one, it wasn't really a good example, considering Knoppix has so many, better, "sol" games.)

My second attempt at Wine failed, I tried to fire off IE - WHOA! Don't do that one! IE tried to start, but died, probably due to IE needing so many "other" stuff that Win OS provides it.

So, I have a Linux Only on my new system, and haven't worried about Windoze or Wine, but its good to know that Wine is smart enough to know how to install a Win (yuck) program into a native Linux partition, and getting it working - take that Mr. Gates ! ! ! [giggle]

Hmmmmm, [giggle], this kind of brings up the subject of being unethical, being able to run a Windoze program in something OTHER THAN windoze - I wonder if Mr. Gates knows about this???? [LOL]

I used to use wine all the time to play Total Annihilation on linux. Nowadays I've got a subscription to Trangaming's site and use winex to play whatever games I can, pretty much only TA. It works great, especially the last release of winex. For office apps and other general software I usually use Crossover Office. It works with many many windows apps, all I've tried with it as a matter of fact. I have to use IE to access my bank account and Crossover office downloaded and installed IE and it works near perfectly (it's fairly slow). I used to use IE under regular wine all the time before crossover office. Some stuff I've used:
wine, winex to play Total Annihilation and Diablo
crossover office to run Lotus Notes, ICQLite(incredibly slow), IE, Microsoft Office 2000, Kazaa, one of those edonkey clients I forget which
wine to run IE, Word
winex to run Diablo 2, Homeworld

OK, what's the difference between wine and winex?

Anyway, what I've been looking at lately is software for chess tournament pairings and official reports to the US Chess Federation. unfortunately, and I don't say this often about linux, there's no linux equivalent right now. I'll have to right some apps, but right now I don't have the time.

So, I downloaded software from http://www.estima.com/chess and http://www.SwissPerfect.com and http://www.SwissSys.com among others. But I don't like to use WINPdoze if at all possible, so I'm going to try WINE.

Wine is from the people working on the original Wine project at (i think) winehq.org, You can read up on it there.
WineX is a product from Transgaming Inc (at trangsaming.com) that is based on the wine project but is actively being developed for the purpose of running windows games under linux, so it focuses on 3d performance, direct X emulation, etc, rather than trying to get all software to run. Access to Transgaming is by subscription at $5/month. I used to be against Transgaming because I believed they were taking public work and trying to market it as their own, but now I feel that they have really done some fine work and they should be allowed to make a couple bucks.

Can you only use games on the transgaming site via subscription with WINEX, or can you try other games like starcraft?
