A better Bittorrent client
Friends,
Even though we have the official 3.3 Bittorrent client (peer-to-peer file sharing software) included with Knoppix -- though, strangely, lacking wxPython library to make it work -- I find it less than generous in configuration features. So, on my hd-install, I installed Shadow's experimental Bittorrent client, a much improved implimentation, and so can you:
http://bt.degreez.net/
Download the latest S-5.8.7 source zip or tar.gz and extract it to any folder you please -- I chose /usr/bin -- and that's it. No compiling necessary. Now, you need to uninstall the old client via command line or with KPackage/Synaptic. While you're there, install wxPython -- I chose libwxgtk2.4-python. Now you're ready to get that latest release of Knoppix in record time. http://www.btsites.tk/ is a good site for links to many torrent sites.
When you click on a .torrent link, you'll have to point your browser to the directory you extracted Shadow's client to and choose btdownloadgui.py to start the process -- use the option to preserve this file association if you wish. A small window will open for you to choose the download directory and then the actual download/upload of the file. Be patient; it may take some time to initiate the transfer. Firewalled machines will never be fast until you open ports 6881 - 6999 but it still works.
I like the advanced preferences and details, and upload throttling capabilities. In extended use, it appears to be perfectly stable for me. Go ahead and give it a try.

You might also like to try azureus. It's a nice java client. Even though they specify Sun's 1.4.2 java virtual machine as a requirement, the BlackDown 1.4.1 JRE bundled with Knoppix seems to work just fine.

It is even available in the point-and-klik warehouse for easiest installation, running Knoppix from CD

Thanks, extremely useful info, but how do you resume a download?

Easy.
Return to the page/torrent link, click on it and the client will automatically check progress and resume the download.
Timesaving Tip:
Right-click on the torrent link and choose "save link as". This will save the torrent file to a folder of your choice so that you simply have to return to that file and click to resume the download -- saves searching for the webpage again. Although, I've found this method to be largely unnecessary with Linux, as the PC will run indefinitely without need for a reboot, unlike XP.
