Can we get a STICKY on this one
I have seen as many as four "threads/topics" on this issue, possibly one STICKY that can be updated to the "current" apt-get sources file. Someone can be updating it, as sites come and go, and "everyone" can get the "updated" list at a single topic.
I have followed these topics, each one, and have modified my sources list to reflect the changes I have read, but still have sites that either hit not found, or defunct, or timed out, etc... I'd hate to limit to places I can get packages, but, the messages tend to scroll off the important stuff, though I know to scroll back and read the pertanent info, I'd hate to waste the time "scanning" a site that is never going to be on-line again...
My current Sources file, contents:
Like I said, maybe a single topic, directed toward the "keeping your Sources.List current", or something...Code:# See sources.list(5) for more information, especialy # Remember that you can only use http, ftp or file URIs # CDROMs are managed through the apt-cdrom tool. # Per suggestions from Knoppix Forum commented out segments (1) # Comment History # (1) - 20040127 # Security updates for "stable" deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org testing/updates main contrib non-free # Security updates for "unstable" user inserted per SecurityHOWTO # AptGet warnings on the below path REMOVED by user until resolved (20040109) #deb http://security.debian.org unstable/updates main contrib non-free # Stable deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian stable main contrib non-free deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free # Sources deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian stable main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free # Testing deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian testing main contrib non-free deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free # Sources deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian testing main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free # Unstable deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free # Sources deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free # Experimental deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian ../project/experimental main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian ../project/experimental main contrib non-free # Package and Software Specific # DVD # currently getting a 301 moved permanently message (commented out 20040109) #deb http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian $(ARCH)/ #deb-src http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sources/ # Mozilla #(1) deb http://non-us.debian.org/~kitame/mozilla ./ #(1) deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/~kitame/mozilla ./ # GNOME 2.0 # deb http://www.gnome.de/debian/ ./ # KDE 3 # deb http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde stable main # deb-src http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde stable main # We get packages from testing/unstable for now # cdbakeoven # deb http://coyote.asoc.euitt.upm.es/mud/debian/ ./ # XFree 4.2/4.3 # currently getting a 404 not found message (commented out 20040109) #(1) deb http://people.debian.org/~branden/packages sid/i386/ #(1) deb-src http://people.debian.org/~branden/packages sid/source/ # deb http://www.penguinppc.org/~daniels/sid/i386 ./ # deb-src http://www.penguinppc.org/~daniels/sid/source ./ # Java deb ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/languages/java/linux/debian woody main non-free deb-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/languages/java/linux/debian woody main non-free deb ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/languages/java/linux/debian unstable main non-free deb-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/languages/java/linux/debian unstable main non-free # deb http://people.debian.org/~sgybas/jdk13 # LyX & others (now in debian/unstable) # deb ftp://ntama.uni-mainz.de/pub/debian unofficial/ # deb-src ftp://ntama.uni-mainz.de/pub/debian unofficial/ # Evolution #(1) deb ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/debian stable main #(1) deb-src ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/debian stable main # Blades Repository (pppoeconf & co) #(1) deb http://people.debian.org/~blade/testing ./ #(1) deb-src http://people.debian.org/~blade/testing ./ # Wine CVS snapshot # deb http://people.debian.org/~andreas/debian wine main # deb-src http://people.debian.org/~andreas/debian wine main # deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 r3 _Potato_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20010427)]/ unstable contrib main non-US/contrib non-US/main

BTW -=- GoWater, apt-spy ??? Is that part of the "apt-get" package already included, and using it, would you, or does it, keep the sources list current. If this apt-spy detects a issue with one of the site areas, should one validate its findings, or take it at "full value" ? Thanks
No its seperate
apt-get install apt-spy
It basically makes a new sources.list and tests the sources.... for availability and speed. You can limit it geographically etc.
Don't forget the apt-get update (afterwards)
BUT
My sources.list is handmade (cut and paste) from http://www.apt-get.org/
If it works for you good
There must be a beter way!!!!
Thanks all: will perm some sort of compromise between the apt-spy, my old sources.list and gowators!
I can't help feeling ther is a best way were missing....
feel free to use mine, its stuff I wanted so you might wanna trawl the apt-get.org link above....
See if anything catches your eye!!!
OK, here's a new one on me. I just tried to apt-get update one of my PCs and get "must run dpkg --configure -a" and when I run that I keep getting install errors on the last apt-get install that was done where the url was bad. Its an infinite loop! I can't apt-get update or install or remove anything! What can be done about this??
TIA,
AJG
There is no such thinig as "the current" sources.list. There are Debian mirrors worldwide and perferrably you use mirrors that are close to you. Synaptic makes editing /etc/apt/aources.list easy. Check it out.Originally Posted by Cuddles

sudo apt-spy -p proxy.yourproxy.com:8080 update
sudo apt-spy -d unstable -s US
I use netselect which sounds like apt-spy. Does anyone have comments on the relative merits of one over the other?
TO try it out, use:
$apt-get install netselect
