This is odd. Is the machine a Dell, by any chance? If so, a search here will throw up ideas (if not a reason).
Try a cold (as in, power off, remove the plug, make a cup of coffee) reset.
Hi all,
I managed to run Knoppix, but when I tried to open Mozilla, Knoppix crashed. So I had to press the reset button and reboot. However, now Windows still recognizes my cdrom drive but wont access it. Same when I try to boot from my cdrom drive, it fails.
Can someone help me out here?
Thx a lot!

From what you've said it could also be the other way around:
